You may want to pull the valve covers and take a look....Not too sure what it could be though...

Is that a split ring or solid in the picture? Edit: I found other pictures and that is a split ring retainer... That has my vote JS01

It might be a timing chain link

Everything in the valve train is intact, split rings on all the rockers.

Jez now that you mention it, it could be part of a timing chain link. ****...

It might not be the chain . Find a old one and compare it first

The ID doesn't jive with the outer link but the inner links likely have a bigger ID. The thickness of one of the inner links is within .001" of this piece.

Going to pull the intake and valley pan and I should be able to get a decent look at the chain.

If you have a double roller, the oil pump needs to be cleranced on the back or the chain will make contact and come apart, did you see a drop in oil pressure before?

Seen this before and only thing left of that motor was the balancer...

The pump was spaced with spacers that came with the timing set and the cover clearanced. Oil pressure seems fine.

Even with the spacers it still will touch if not cleranced

Did you build the motor from scratch or did you get the motor already built, It could have been in the engine from a previous build, different brand chains may have different link sizes, Just a thought .

It's an HKE short block that I put together. The chain was brand new although I don't remember the brand right now. It's been running for about a year now.

This is what I was thinking...the edge of a shim shown in the bottom of the photo. Just a WAG though.

No shims under the Jesel setup.

Didn't work on it tonight. Should have the intake and valley cover off this weekend and will take a look at the chain.
