I've recently come into 4 Junkyard shortblocks. What should I look for before slapping heads/topend on them? Two are Gen III and two are Gen IV. I have no info on them at all. I don't have a bunch of special tools, but I do have the basics and a few torque wrenches plus a torque angle gauge.

Anybody?

Can I hit the shortblock with my pressure washer? Then oil it down and check bearings and stuff?

Well if they don't have heads and/or covers on them currently and have been exposed to the weather, I would tear them down and check everything. If they are in long block, just pull the oil pan, front/rear covers, and heads to inspect. You can usually guesstimate mileage by how the cylinders look, ring ridge or not/cross hatching or not. Also displacement should be stamped on the block.
