Default Seeking advice 5.3 liter Vortec

Hi,

I've got a 5.3 liter vortec out of a 2007 Tahoe. It's a "Gen IV" (LMG) with VVT and DOD. I'm a noob when it comes to this kind of stuff, but was curious to hear your thoughts on whether I should retain the VVT and DOD or get rid of them. I don't know if a high performance cam is compatible with VVT or if getting rid of it is a requirement. From what I understand there is a "kit" you can use to reposition the cam position sensor, and getting rid of the DOD is just a matter of reprogram the ECU. Is this correct? Anyone have any guidance? Thanks.

Hi - thanks for responding. The engine in going into a 1997 Volvo 960 sedan. It's more of a project car, so I would be counting on it to get to work. With the 3.73 diff I can go up to 400 HP before I need to start worrying about blowing it up.

If you aren't looking at camming it then I would suggest scrapping the DOD system and leave the VVT in place and active. DOD sucks and the 07-10 were the most problematic out there. I'd pull heads change the lifters and tray's to standard LS lifters and tray's and order a non DOD valley cover. After that's done you have a 5.3 that will run 100's of thousands of miles reliably in totally stock form. Throw a nice tune and a stall behind it if you are running a auto and you will have a great running engine. Tuned up 5.3 will move that volvo more than swiftly and reliably for a daily driver.

The factory cam in that motor is DOD specific. You will need a new cam to use all non-dod lifters. I just performed a dod delete to a 2007 5.3L LY5 myself. Some really good write ups on the net about doing this.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input. Just picked up the engine this weekend. My next purchase will be an engine stand.
