Default How many Rpms are you turning your stroker?

Planning an ls3 427ci build. Looking to set the limiter at 7800rpms. Has anyone had any piston skirt wear problems with their stroker? I know the big stroke pulls the skirt out of the bore but is this as serious as they make it sound? This will be a DRAG CAR ONLY. So milage will be limited.

Please post setups and your experience. As well as a piston manufacturer u recommend. Might be sending the pistons out to get the skirts coated by swain tech for safety.

Thanks

I believe in staying 4.000" stroke max, if you want rpms. IMO.

Any personal experience with a 4 or 4.125 stroke?

How often do you plan to open the engine up for rebuilds....annually?

If not, you may want to go with a 4" stroke.

I have had good experience with Wiseco. They have shelf pistons for 4.1" stroke engines. As long as the machine work is good, you shouldn't have any more skirt wear with a 4.1" stroke than you would a 4" stroke.

As for RPM, 4.1" is really nothing. I used to build 4.5" stroke BBC engines with heavy rods and pistons that would live at 5500-6500RPM for hours. A 4.1" small block crank at 7800RPM would be cake.

i see alot of people running a 427 with an ls3 block so i couldnt imagine it would be that bad of a problem. its going in what was an original 66 corvette big block 427 turbo jet car. would be cool to match the 427 LS to match the car.

I have an Ls3 based 427 in my 1965 Skylark and right now we are shifting at 6800 rpm due to the power curve. No problems.

I couldn't tell you off the top of my head, but like the LS stuff, it depends on the block.

Not the best idea to run that much stroke on stock length sleeves. It will work but a 4" would be better.

Anyone saying it's a bad idea have any personal experience with it? Or are you just relaying the Internet claims to me? Any engine builders actually take an engine apart and see wear on the pistons to a point it had to be replaced?

When properly done, it's typically just the skirt coating that wears. I haven't seen a good running 4.1" stroke taken apart yet. The ones I have seen had other problems that caused the tear down and damaged the pistons.
