Default 500hp 6.0

i have a friend that lives in sioux falls, S.D. and races at thunder valley in marion... He has an old 406 sbc in a 78 malibu and is wanting to switch platforms as he just put a cam only 5.3 in his 97z and is falling in love with the lsx platform but he and myself are quite clueless to ls stuff... with that being said he is wanting a 500 to 530 flywheel hp with a budget in mind... this motor will be carbed as he does not know how to tune a efi set up and doesn't want to bother with efi

i do not know ls stuff all to well but i would like to here some very budget friendly combos that will obtain the above listed goal. he currently runs e85 from a mark sullens carb on the 406 so we can go fairly high with the compression if possible. but has a gas carb as well if we need/want 93 pump for optimal power

as stated above what will get him his goals the cheapest?

from the little research ive done (keep in mind i do not know ls stuff) i was thinking a SBE 6.0 with some hand ported 243's, decent sized hydro roller cam like a 242/248, low to mid 600 lift on like a 108 lobe, with a single plane, ewp.

i don't think we need forged stuff in the bottom end or any aftermarket casting heads, or solid roller stuff to obtain this goal... any combos that you guys are running similar in this horsepower range please post them up and detailed specs on the engine in terms of what block, heads, cam, lifters, rockers, intake if you dont mind

thank you!

No and you don't even need a cam that big with ported heads.

If you were going cam only with a 242/248 that would more than suffice. If you're going with ported 243s you can do a mid 230s cam and get there.

My 223/230 cammed 6.0 with AI heads reached those numbers, so no need for a big donkey dick cam unless he likes those.

Good stuff. What would be the better option? A big cam only set up or a set of ported 243s aand a mild cam? Are these 6.0s a flat top piston from the factoy or do they have a bowl? I just didnt want him to put a massive cam in it and have ptv clearance issues and get stuck with fly cutting pistons or running a thick hg

Whats a good lifter, rocker, spring combo he can get?

Call us up @ Texas Speed so we can discuss your build. I think we will be able to spec you a camshaft to meet the goals!!

A smaller cam with ported heads is 99% of the time a better option than a huge cam and stock heads. There are many benefits of better designed heads (whether aftermarket or ported) and a smaller cam is easier to drive and easier on the valvetrain.

And yes, with a donkey dick cam there always comes into play the PTV factor, something that you don't have to worry about in the other scenario.
