Precision LS Billet Barbell and other Oil System Improvement products!
The Oil Galley Barbell in your LS based engine is something that is over looked. And yet it serves a very important mission of directing oil to the oil filter. If oil leaks past the Barbell it will go unfiltered directly to the Cam Bearing, Lifters, Crank and Rod Bearings. (See Diagram Below) The factory Barbell is approximately .020” to loose so particles as big as 500 Microns can leak past the factory Barbell. Your oil filter will filter out 15 to 25 Microns depend on the brand of filter. Our 7075 Aluminum Precision Billet Barbell fits with approximately .001” clearance which will let only about 20-25 Microns pass by, that same as the filter.

Another important part is the shaft of the Barbell. The oil has to flow around it to get though the oil port. Our Billet Barbell has a 30% smaller shaft for much less flow restriction.

We have also added a 1/4-20 threaded hole in the end of our Barbell for easy removal. Just screw a 1/4-20 bolt in and pull the barbell out. No more digging and prying to get the factory one out.

Better engine protection from much less and smaller particles bypassing, smaller less restrictive shaft for better oil flow, replaceable High Temperature Viton O ring and for ease of service a threaded 1/4-20 hole.
Why would you ever put the plastic factory Barbell back in your expensive LS engine build?

I may have to pick one up. I use all your alignment tools for the front and rear covers. They make alignment a snap.

I have always wondered what that plug was for, now I know. I'll definitely pick one up for the new motor. It's always the little things.

I am glad that I saw this thread. I have your alignment tools that I will be using soon to assemble the two engines I am putting together. I was getting ready to buy two new factory barbells and I did not realize there was a higher quality alternative. I just ordered two of them. Thank you.

With less tolerance built into your aluminum barbell, what happens at high temperature when the barbell expands?

Hi Andrew,
The oil passage also expands with the Barbell. Also we did an expansion test and took a Barbell that was at approximately 60 degrees and took it up to 220 and it only expanded less then .0005".

TURBOLSBIRD, They are made of 7075 aluminum.

Why wouldn't this have an o-ring on both ends?
It seems like that would solve the oil bypass problem entirely.

We experimented with the O ring, the problem is that when you slide it in, the oil galley's that come up from the filter and go to the cam are very sharp and cut chunks off of the O ring. These pieces of O ring would clog the lifters and get in the bearings and do who knows what else. When doing the prototype we were lucky we able to fish the pieces out on the several attempts that we tried O rings. That is probably why the factory didn't go with a O ring on that end. So we decided it is much safer to just make a better fit.:cheers:

Question for you Christian

What stops the barbell from traveling back the thickness of the gasket until it hits the rear cover? This would be on the factory barbell or yours.

Is it having fairly equal pressure on both sides of the barbed section?

Hi Senna,
The Barbell does slide back until it hits the cover. Thats why when you pull the cover the Barbell is sticking out about .050".
There is a little lower pressure on the shaft side of the Barbell from the restriction of the oil going through the filter. Thats why the Barbell gets pushed back to the cover and unfiltered oil can get by if its loose. Hope that helps. :cheers:
