396 LS3 stroker

396 LS3 stroker I just recently acquired a 99 Z/28. At 1st, I was dead set on a forged turbo 5.3, then a pro charged 5.3. Realizing to build the way I want to build it, it would be a fortune, I came back to the old school mindset of more cubes. My question is has anyone used this setup in a street car? Currently the COPO Camaro's have an ls3 396 that's used in super stock. Sounds like a good package.

Nobody is running this. Why? Because Scoggin Dickey, Texas Speed, Katech, Livernois, and many others have 408-418 iron truck block engines and 416-427 LS3 engines that are proven to make good power for less or the same money as the 396 you're looking at.
What's your budget? What's your goal? Does the car run right now?
If you want to run 9's in a play toy "street car" but you have a Pabst Blue Ribbon budget you'd be better off investing in an axle, suspension, tires, and a heads/cam/nitrous build before dumping 10 grand into an engine.

As of now, the car doesn't run. So I am looking at engine combos for it. The previous owner had a 370 in it and wanted to keep it. Street, track reliability are my goals. If it kissed the 10's, that would be great. But I need to think this out. I wasn't dead set on the 396. Just asking.

OK.......if I were in your position right now, I'd go the Texas Speed turn-key route; they have several engines to choose from.

This is WHY GM sells a LS-3 Rough Bore Block @ 3.930" for $900.00.
Buy that item, bore to 3.965" (good for ring, NO file fit).
Buy a Forged 4.00" crankshaft, rods, pistons.

Lance, do you have a part number for that block? That would make an excellent block to bore to 4" and still have a lot of meat left while maintaining a strong block for a turbo setup.
