Need help replacing rod bolts w/ stock rod bolts (LY6) I have a LY6 shortblock. I needed to remove the crank to change to a 24x reluctor wheel. I want to replace the rod bolts with stock rod bolts. I was surprised to see SPS 12.9 bolts on there now. The bolts don't come out of the rod cap due to a sleeve in the cap. I guess I just tap them outof the bolt hole? The new gm bolts have a small sleeve on the bolt. Do I just tighten the rod bolt and the pressure from tightening seats the new sleeve? Thanks |
If you can avoid that, you should. Rods get distorted by the removal and insertion of bolts. The bore rarely stays perfectly round. They usually have to be "reconditioned". Why are you thinking that replacing them is A Good Idea? |
I really don't know anything about the SPS bolts. When I first saw that they wouldn't come out I intended to leave them but then I saw they weren't stock and thought I should. I believe the later LS rod bolts were pretty strong. |
It ended up being no big deal. I could tap out the old bolts pretty easily and the new bolts went in very easy. Unfortunately I ordered 6 too few. I guess I was in the block main mode and ordered 10 of these as well. Thanks for the input. |
SPS = Standard Pressed Steel (company name) Now all you have to do is get your rods "resized", "reconditioned", whatever you want to call it; basically, the bearing journals restored to a perfect circular shape. Pretty good chance your build won't survive for long otherwise. Nothing "definite", but, odds are... Probably wasn't necessary at all, but at this point, it is what it is. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do with what ya got to do it with. |
