1500 miles on Fresh cast iron 6.2 with ls3 internals

Hey guys, so I have about 1500 miles on my new motor that i built, changed the oil about 4 times, and my oil pressure at hot idle is 40 psi. I have done wot tuning at around 800 miles and dialrd in the tune spot on using hptuners. Tomm I wanted to go to the track for 1/8th mile runs, is that alright? I know I've done wot tuning already but at 1500 miles everything should he broken in already no? What you guys think about tracking the truck at 1500 miles on the motor?

Shouldn't be a problem at all. Doesn't sound like you built anything over the top that would unduly stress it. Its not really a new motor anyways, its well seasoned which means tolerances shouldn't shift around. If your still nervous just make a series of easy passes building up to a full WOT run. There's a lot of builds that go from engine stand to strip with almost zero break in. New from the factory don't even get lengthy break in periods.

3200 stall. Texas speed stage 2 ls3 cam, double layer valve springs. Thanks for the reply

Agreed. Go for it!

I know people that thrash on motors day one and they live no problem. And the same ones that do it I've known them long enough to see them do it on multiple vehicles, bikes etc..

Makes you start to wonder how important break in is.

I however still take is very serious and take it slow and easy.

All that said, beat the piss out of it, it's got far more than enough miles on it to do so.

Every car gets blasted at wide open throttle at the end of the assembly line on a chassis dyno which checks all vehicle functions. I’ve had throttles stick wide open on first starts, engines flew to the moon, and were some of the best running motors over the duration, just as mentioned.

i think if an engine is going to fly apart, it would be during the first few seconds, or not at all. More and more write ups say to apply max cylinder pressure as soon as possible for ring seating. A lot of the marine engine builders say on a new motor they will fire it up, set the timing, then go ring it’s neck.

I think an easy break in just makes us emotionally feel like we are doing the right thing. It is really just metal parts. Should behave the same regardless from a science perspective, and could even be best for ring seating.

On air cooled aircraft, they want you to roll the throttle on gradually as to not have the head pull away from the block due to sudden temp increasing.

Let the block, heads, and oil warm up to stable temp, then put the screws to it.

The more I read about all this the more I think hammering on it right away is best, like you said for ring sealing.

I had a built motor that I went super easy on and a buddy of mine, and both had funky issues. We both put tons of baby miles on them first, then hammered. Mine had a cylinder a little low on compression and his just never seemed right. Then I see all these guys firing them up, letting them warm up and hammering them on the dyno to break them in, and never having an issue.

Give it a heat cycle or two. Seat the rings ASAP. Drive it like you stole it.
Our new circle track engines didn’t even get a heat cycle. We set the rings at practice, two hours before a main event.
There’s really nothing to “break in” on a new modern day roller tapper engine, other than a good ring seating session. I like the heat cycle to help head gasket seal. I always say whatever you do, don’t “lug” a new engine. Keep some rpm in it for proper oiling.
Take that thing to the track, mr. editor!

You know, Scott, you nailed it when you mentioned flat tappets vs. roller tappets. Back in the day we had to be careful with how we scuffed in the cam and lifters. No more, Baby! Now it's just the RINGS! As said, get it all properly warmed up, THEN MAKE IT RUN! Best thing for the rings!

FWIW all the engines we build, we put them on the chassis dyno under a heavy load, drive it at varying speeds for 15-20 minutes. Let it cool down. Change the oil, cut the filter open. Then start beating the hell out of it.

Oh yea guys, I drove the shit out of it, 1 pass, my g80 posi differential grenades mid pass between 1 to 2 shift hahahaha...motor is good

The Grenade Eighty lives up to its reputation. Im sure the track people were pleased having to clean up the scrapnel and gear oil.
