Opinions on how many times rod bolts can be torqued Just wondering if anybody has experience with this? I have read that the rod bolts are reusable but I was wondering how they would be affected each time they are torqued. I replaced the bearings in mine and I had the machine shop measure the rod bearings and crank journals so they would have been torqued once at the factory, atleast once at the Machine shop, and then I double checked everything with plastigauge just to be safe, then the final assembly. Has anybody ever checked the stretch of the factory bolts after a few retorques? Thanks |
They are not torque-to-yield, so you could easily go dozens of times or more. Probably not indefinite, but you will not be able to wear them out with what you are doing, as long as recommended tightening is not exceeded, the bolt is not changing permanently. |
Great thanks, I have been torquing them at 15ft lbs and then 85 degrees like the gm manual says with Gen 4 rods. |
Yes they are re usable. But with a bolt that critical I worry about resuing them. If you're already down there and have the rods at the shop I would put in new GM bolts or ARP and have the rod caps sized. Just for peace of mind. The gen 4 rod bolts hold a ton of rpm and do the job, but I worry about any bolt's retention of tensile strength when it's been repeatedly torqued. I can't say it's a valid concern though. But with rod bolts there's no room for error either. Edit: Basically exactly what Formula said above is how I feel about it. And, if you put in new GM bolts you shouldn't have to do any sizing of the big ends, but just check them like you already did to make sure. Up to you on re using them. How much are new ones? |
