Cam Suggestions

I got two cam suggestion for my LS3 build. They are the BTR LS3 N/A STAGE III from Brian Tooley and the Titan 3 from Cam Motion.Has anyone use these? What is your eperiance with them? I am liking the BTR but it shows that its from Comp Cams and I am a little leery of them do to the whining I heard they make.

Cam Motion for the win

99 Black Bird T/A 03-13-2019 06:31 PM

Cam Motion - LS3 Titan III
Duration at .050": 227/237 621"/.604" 113

BTR LS3 STAGE 3 CAMSHAFT
Specs: 229/244 .615"/.595" 113+4

That's an interesting dilemma. I'm sure both are good choices. When picking between two cam that are close.

Daily driver type - pick the smaller one

Weekend Warrior - pick the bigger one

i like the Cam Motion Cam Especially for Aftermarket or well ported stock heads (not the gmpp).
For a street build.......... Even more.

Are the GMPP CNC heads not any good?

Bigger ports that flow less.... AKA not efficient.

What would be a good head choice?

G Atsma 03-14-2019 03:03 PM

Stock LS3 heads are good for 600+HP. What are your HP goals?

MechMan1 03-14-2019 03:13 PM

I would like to make 600 crank power or as close to that. This will mostly be a street car so it needs to have some manners. I’m also trying not to get hung up on numbers. 500 wheels would be fun but I also don’t want to have to rev to 7k for it get fun.

G Atsma 03-14-2019 03:35 PM

Stock LS3 heads will be fine for that. Save the money...

NAVYBLUE210 03-14-2019 04:41 PM

Stock Heads ported (Darrin Morgan port job very good value for the money), The Cam Motion Titan 3 , stock intake,
Rod Mod ported if desired but not necessary, 11.0:1 Comp, 1 7/8" LTs, and True Duals = 500+ RWHP W/M6
easy peasy with Great Driving Manners and more fun to drive on the street.

Recently finished this build. Car is a narrow body C6 Vette with LS3 and M6 transmission.=left
TxSpeed ported LS3 heads. They CNC port your heads, do a valve job, mill to spec, and set up the valve springs for $750. Hell of a deal. Absolutely not the best money can buy, but WAY less cheddar than a set of CNC ported aftermarket heads. They were milled .010 and installed with a .040 thick Cometic head gasket. Static C/R around 11.3:1.=left
CamMotion cam 226/234 115+4 with .620 lift on both sides. "0" overlap and very well mannered. BTR springs and pushrods. New Z06 lifters.=left
Gwatney ported and rod modded LS3 intake manifold.=left
Ported throttle body.=left
Powerbond 10% u/d crank pulley.=left
Kooks 1.875" LT's with 3" Z06/ZR1 non catted mids and Z06 mufflers.=left
Vararam CAI.=left
=left
It made 507/459 uncorrected and 500/454 std on a Dynojet. It drives like a dream. Idle is a little choppy with little or no lope. No shake. I haven't gotten it to misbehave yet, but haven't driven it a whole lot either. We did Z51 sways and Z06 shocks along with everything else. Quite the transformation from before to after. My son did about 98% of the work. I supplied beer and set up the valve train.

Proof you don't need an ill mannered cam to make some nice power numbers

I wonder if this cam in an Ls3 allows the use of a 0.040" 4.100" bore diameter headgasket while leaving plenty of ptv in case of a mis-shift.
I've been looking at this Titan stage 3 among with the old Spin 230 234 and Pat G 230 238, I can't decide.

I am waiting to hear back from Brian Tooley on some questions I had but I now think I am leaning towrds the Cam Motion cam. I forgot to say I was goung to build this motor from scratch and will be putting it in a 4th gen Monte SS.

You might also consider one of the Cam Motion low lash solid rollers.

Hey MechMan1,

The Titan 3 is an excellent street camshaft and is our most popular LS3 camshaft by far. It has a defined lope/chop hotrod idle, but still has excellent drivability. More good news is that it makes excellent midrange power. Our customers tell us it is the perfect balance. And, of course, you get the renowned Cam Motion quality. This camshaft is also available through BTR and Summit as noted in the other posts.

MechMan1 03-21-2019 01:49 PM

Thank you for the reply. I was speaking with Bob Cook from Cam Motion. He was very helpful in helping to spec the camshaft. I will probably buy my heads from Brian Tooley and have them milled about .024 with their spring kit. The Titan 3 does seem that it will fit the bill with what I am looking for. Just dont want to have to always rev the motor high to get into the power band. This is mainly going to be a cruiser.

They are both excellent choices.
The valve events are spot on.
The cam motion cam will drive smoother because it has 6 degrees overlap vs 10.5 for the Brian Tooley camshaft.
However, the 229/244 113+4 cam has an earlier EVO and will make more peak power and carry the power a little better after peak.
It will also be a little stronger from 3500rpm+
If you are concerned with low speed manners, go the cam motion,
If you want a camshaft that's a bit more aggressive with decent driveability, and stronger in the top end go the BTR cam.
You will be happy either way

Cam Motion FTW!! I’ve ran cam from Tooley also but with cathedral setups and they were strong running cars. Ended up going with Cam Motion for my LS3 and now have a low lash solid roller that Steven spec’d. I went with them over the others this go around because of the reputation Cam Motion has and very please with the customer service I got from them. Steven even took time out of his day to talk to me for about a half hour on the phone about why he spec’d the cam he did for my setup.
