High torque 6.0 build cam
 
Doing a 6.0 with 317 heads, flat top pistons to replace a 5.3 in my 11 avalanche, looking for high torque setup and looking for a cam that would do this..been told a LS2 or LS6 cams. Would rather use a stock type cam due to cost if possible, thanks for any input

The late LS2 cam is 204/211, .525/.525, 117LSA (Summit data source), where the late LS6 cam is 204/218, .555/.551,117.5LSA (same source). Either should do well in a 6.0

The LS6 cam is your best bet for a stock cam, but bang for your buck there's no better place to spend money than on the cam.

The above is true, and unfortunately, you will pay as much for a new stock cam as for a better aftermarket cam. IF you can locate a GOOD used OEM cam CHEAP then all the better. Otherwise it is better to get a drop in truck cam from either Cam Motion or TSP.

I wouldn't put a ls6 cam in a truck. I would find the largest of the ls1 cams and use it with a set of 1.8 or 1.9 roller rockers and psi 1511 valvesprings or even ls6 valvesprings would work i believe. That will be a better choice for bottom and mid range a truck needs.

A ls6 cam with no stall will be lazy down low and it won't make peak power till 6400ish. Not really what a truck needs unless you plan on gears/converter.

Cam motion has some nice drop in truck cams to. You might want to look into those.

not from what I have found, GM cams 135-150 aftermarket about 400...pretty hefty difference

Yes, some towing...the 5.3 is marginal just with the truck...towing not good in my opinion...but did have 2 duramax's so am spoiled

Edit- The only GM cam I've seen that cheap new is the LS9.

I wouldn't even bother then. Use the dmax.....and that's coming from someone with a 6.0 2500hd

Realistically for towing gear is probably your best friend.....not a cam. Especially in a 1500 avalanche that probably only had 3.42 or 3.73 max gear ratio.

Did parts/labor pursue you to sell the diesel? I know alot of guys that have had diesels that went back to a gas burner....

No, my son who drives the car on here, bought a cummins dually to pull car trailer with(I do not like it by the way) so I sold my last duramax and went back to a avalanche(which I love them...except for the power) still pull boats, smaller trailers etc. Deleted the DOD couple of years ago, would love to get a new truck with a 6.2 but not in my budget as now retired. So have a bunch of LS engines and parts just wanting to do a high torque deal for the Av. Also by the way found out the LS6 cam is no deal...weird some GM cams are cheap, that one is not

You have to be the first person i heard that said that they dont like a dodge Cummins. Wow!!

So knowing what you know now you rather have a Duramax over a Cummins dodge?

Just generally speaking you said you have some parts laying around. I would recommend you run a pair of 706 heads over the 317 heads on your 6.0 motor.

The Dually can actually be rated to less GVW hauling than the single wheel,, in the 2500...
Also if you get a Ram with steel wheels check the rating on them, All 4 my dad
has owned came with wheels that were not rated to the trucks towing rate. :evil:

Well after driving both, the cummins has nowhere near the power of the duramax and the dodge trans is POS...falls right in line with their electronics. dont have any of those heads

Damn this here is getting good now. What model duramax you have vs what model cummins? Certain year duramax trucks are no joke.

I had a 05 and a 08, both I had for 5 years ea, only issue ever with either was a couple of glow plugs. the cummins is a 04.5, everybody has their own opinion, but after working on, driving, towing with the dodge...I would never buy anything from them.
