Default Lh6 aluminum block damage

I have an 06 GMC envoy with a 5.3 liter V8. I think it痴 the LH6 variant if my research is correct. Aluminum block and heads for certain. I had a piston fail, and I知 replacing the motor in my truck with a low mileage junkyard pull. I知 thinking of rebuilding the old motor for a swap project I have in mind.

When the piston went, it mostly disintegrate. Crank looks ok, heads are fine. But it scarred the sleeve up and took a chunk out of the cylinder wall on the crank side. I知 an old rodder, but I知 not so familiar with the LS series. I知 not sure if the block is trash or if it can be repaired. Replacing the sleeve is within things I知 familiar with. The block damage not so much.

That block can be sleeved on that hole only, if there’s no underlying damage there. If the aluminum around the sleeve is hurt, it’s junk unless you want to spend more on it than you can get another one for. Ive got an aluminum 6liter block in my shop that had a piston let go in it. I had my machinist put a Darton replacement sleeve in it and it turned out nice. Cost me under $300 if I remember correctly for the repair. The block will have to bore .005” at least due to other cylinders around the repair being out of round when it’s fixed. I went .010” because it was easier finding pistons in that size at the time.

It's what Chevelle said, if the block is damaged, it's junk. Steve@RED is the expert on this, maybe he will chime in. If you need a replacement block, I have an alum 5.3 Gen 4 block I am selling.

That block looks like scrap to me. Even if it's sleeved, there isn't much guarantee that a crack won't propagate or leak water. I just got an aluminum 5.3L shortblock for less than $500. IMO, it's not worth it to repair it.

That block isn't worth the time or money to fix. You can find decent used 5.3 blocks on Ebay for $600 plus or minus.
