Default How much oil are you burning during break-in?

I have just installed my 402 and have about 300 mi. on it and I'm burning about 1/3 - 1/2 quart every 120 miles so far. I'd like to here about your oil consumption during break-in.

Driven about 900 miles so far and haven't lost any. I would be worried if the rings aren't hellfire/gapped really wide for extreme nitrous.

Rings are set up for 15 - 18 lbs boost.

Sounds about right. My friend's 404ci LS2 is doing the same thing and it has about 400mi on it. The rings are probably still trying to seat, especially if those first few miles have been taken easy.

What did the supplier say. Do they expect it to get better by say 1000 miles?

If it's built for boost, then you're obviously gonna have some blowby b/c the rings are looser without the added boost. However, I don't personally think THAT much oil should be being burned. I had a 370 ring gapped for an easy 300 shot of nitrous (and I was driving it NA) and I didn't burn nearly that much oil. Of course, I'd rather defer the opinion to others who have run motors built for boost. Might wanna post in the FI section if no one responds in here.

I would call whoever built your engine, and ask them if its normal. Whenever I did the first miles on my new motor about a month ago, I dont remember any noticable oil loss. That being said, I also changed the oil at about 150 miles, then after another 200, so in that short of time, I didnt notice any oil loss. My last change after about 1000 miles, i also didnt notice any oil loss.

They think it is a little excessive. Then I talked with another person with a similar setup who is burning a little more than me and their builder (MTI) said that the lower compression motors initially burn more oil. I agree with what everyone is saying. I'm getting mixed opinions. The thing is, it has taken me months to get this far. The motor runs awsome. I will be very bummed if I have to yank it and start over.

Do a compression test... Also check the plugs to see if they are oily. It should not take that long to seat a set of rings. JMHO.

I concur, especially with Diamond rings. I could understand with a hellfire ring setup, but not with Diamonds.
