Default New 402 motor smoking on start up

Friends 402 ls2 motor seems to smoke some on firt start up. It is a white smoke that smells like oil burning. The motor only has 200 miles on it so far. It doesnt smoke while driving just on start wether the motor is cold or hot. Is the rings still not seated yet or is this something we should be concerned about right now or should we wait till about 1000 miles after break in is over. We are using cheap 10w-30 oil for break in right now..

I would wait till the 1000 mile mark, the rings could take some time to seat, they "should" be good in about 7-10 heat cylces. If it's still there I would check the oil levels, pull the intake see if there is oil on top of the valves, check the oil for water in case a head gasket is leaking a little, etc. But for now I wouldn't be concerned unless you are eating a ton of oil.

Ok update, I think that I got some bad valve seals. Took the car out tonight, oil was full when I left, didnt get on the car to much except alittle on the way back to the house, check the oil and it is now 1 quart low. Gonna pull the plugs tomorrow and have a look.

Plugs look ok. They are white on the tips but they have alittle bit of oil on the threads of the plugs. 3 of the plugs looked alittle dirty on the tips but nothing crazy. The heads are new and have about 1k miles on them.

What type of heads? I would pull the intake and see if there is any oil on top of the intake valves.

They are ls6 stg 3 livernios heads. I will be pulling the intake tomorrow. If there is oil in there what are some issues that would cause that.

In that your heads are ported, I bet you are sucking oil down the rocker bolts. When they port the heads they open the top of the intake port to the bolt. Need to seal those bolt threads with some thread sealer. Sounds far fetched but trust me on this, I have been there.

Are you talking about thread sealer like I put on the head bolts. I put thread locker on them, should I put thread sealer on them also....

I don't think you should put thread sealer on the head bolts!!!
That may be your problem there.

Anyway, See5 was talking about the "bolts" that attach the rocker arms to the head. When a cylinder head is ported, they remove so much material that it actually breaks in the hole drilled for the rocker support.

I may not be 100% though, can someone back this up?

Stock head bolts go in dry and ARPs with lube but I am talking about the bolts that hold the rocker arms to the head, specfically the four on each side that hold the intake rocker.

Well I removed the rocker bolts and put a dab of thread sealer on them and aloowed it to dry for a bit and started the car up and it still smokes. I am now leaning towards the valve seals. Goin to do a compression check just to make sure on the short block them pull the heads.

If you only allowed the car to start once after the thread sealer the smoke could have been residual oil from the last time the car ran. Drive it enough to let it burn it out. Let it cool then see if it still smokes. Then I would lean towards valve seals.

If it was the valve seal would the car be eating oil. The car no longer uses oil but still smokes alittle on start up.

Keep letting it burn off... Drive it again...
