Default Streetable Cam choice for 440ci LS7

I'm just new to the forum and looking at a 440 LS7 stroker from Texas Speed. (This will be shipped to Australia to be installed in a Commodore).

Firstly, what size cam (roughly) is going to give me a wicked idle and good power (I'd like over 550rwhp), but still retain great drivability? Is 240 / 248 @ .050 on 114 with .640 / .640 lift going to be too big to retain nice drivability???
To help with the question of drivability, the car has a T56 with 3.91 gears.

Secondly, are there other performance shops over there that can offer a similar deal on a built LS7 as Texas Speed?

Sorry, should have specified.

I'll run the PRC CNC ported LS7 heads that come in the Long Engine deal they have listed on their website. I'll use the standard LS7 intake manifold also.

Cheers

you can use the stock intake as long as it is ported....its a huge difference from a stocker to a ported stocker

Nothing better then a costume spec'd cam for your specific need. Get someone that knows cams to spec you one out. Traver

Thanks for the replies.

Those Comp cams seem pretty large, would they be very streetable??? (I guess streetable can mean different things to different people.)

Thanks for the advice on porting the LS7 intake manifold.

My 454 idles at 975rpms with ZERO surging. It passed my emissions test. I'm trowing down just at 600rwhp and 550 rwtq. At 1800-2000rpms, you would think the car was a cammed 346.

Remember: a large cam is swallowed up by the large motor. Here a video of my 253/259 .643/.613 114+4. It was tuned a little more aggressively. But it was running PIG rich at idle when I filmed this.. Not to mention this was a custom gring Cam motion cam. I pulled it out cause it was too much for me.

That sounds bloody great, though I think it may be a bit too "angry" for me. I really do love that tough idle though!!! Thanks for posting it up...

So can you verify that people are wrong for thinking a sheet metal intake KILLS low end torque for a street car and makes it a pig off the line and down low??????

I hate when people say that. A guy here has a Beck intake on his street car (427ci) and he has enough low end torque to light his BFG drag radials at 45mph all the way up to about 80mph.

Can you post the dyno graph?

Flow numbers for your heads?

You said in your post that this 253/259 .643/.613 114+4 was too much for you...but your sig shows you have an even bigger cam in there?????

As far as the cam goes, I went less aggressive lobes, and less lift on the intake side. I also went to a 113+3.
Basically I went from a radical cam motion cam to a solid Comp cam.

As far as the intake goes.. I am afraid to admit, but I lost soo much torque down low it was ridiculous.

Now that being said, It wasnt a truely fair comparison. Casue when I added the intake, I also went to larger headers and a different cam.

Bu to be 10000000 percent honest, I went from right around 549rwtq, to 476rwtq.

I know, I know, that cant be possible right.. I didnt think so either. But my car fell flat on its face with the LME/Beck intake. Not to mention the higher IAT's

BUT... The real proof is gonna be when I finish tuning my FAST 92. This will give me the most accurate results. Because then everything will be identicle, with only the intakes being different. NOTHING has been changed, and both tunes were optimized for their intake..

On a side note, I swear, I could have spun my motor to 9000rpms. The intake climbed at 7200rpms at the same rate it did at 6000 rpms. It NEVER dropped off.

Needless to say, I was VERY disappointed.

But also, the dyno conditions SUCKED ***. So I will se to it that the dyno conditions suck just as bad.

In the end, is was a HUGE waste of money, but a great lesson learned. The real truth will be the new FAST I just installed.

No matter what, even WITH the drop in power, it ran like a raped ape.

I consider the cam in my sig very streetable. I wouldn't want to drive it daily, but I could. A cam in the 240's on a 114 should drive like stock with the right tune. If you're going to get the long block from TSP I'd let them spec the cam. They port the heads and should know what cam will compliment them. They would also I imagine have the most hands on experiance with different cams matched to their heads.
