Default Broke prc dual, Anything to look for?

I heard a jingle a couple days ago and got a misfire code, car ran fine. It happened again another occasion and once again car seemed to run fine. I did an oil change as routine maintainance and out came a few small pieces of spring attached to my magnet (a couple pieces were pretty smashed up). My oil and filter appeared to be clean as far as no shavings, or other stuff.

I pulled valve covers and noticed that one of the inner springs on an intake valve (.644 lift) was broken into pieces. The seal was also pretty messed up. Guessing it ran fine since it was a dual spring and the outter was still fine. I pulled the plug and it looked fine, no signs of detonation or metal specs.

What caused this? I did the installation myself and am positive everything was done properly. I heat cycled the springs a couple times to break them in before being hard on them. I let proper warmup before getting into high rpms so I don't see anything i did wrong.

What can I do to make sure I fix this properly, I don't want to have to worry about metal pieces inside the engine causing more damage. I put a magnet inside the oil pan and it didnt pick anything else up. I plan on replacing this spring and will go through every one of them to make sure there aren't other problems. I will change all my seals as well just because i've been burning a bit of oil.

How many miles did you have on that spring?

Did you use a valve spring micrometer and set the proper installed height (for the PRC duals) for all springs?

I did not use any valve spring micrometer, however, i had a complete kit from tsp with seats and retainers, doesn't that mean i don't have to?

Inner springs usually don't break, what seals are you using? If the second generation seals (combined seal/seat) which are what came on the 02 from the factory, this will cause the inner spring to fail. You need the first generation seals.

You should always check to be sure. Nothing is ever perfect and it will only save your spring life/motor down the road.

something tells me that you had a defective set or there is another factor in breaking 5. That shouldn't have happened.

Why would anyone run a dual spring with the stock style spring cups in the first place! It seems kinda dumb to me being that the stock cups aren't designed for that type of seat pressure.

Its not the seat pressure that is the issue.

If he used the whole prc kit from TSP the seals would not have been one piece.

True, but it is worth asking as it wouldn't be the first time.

Since you asked what to look for - look for a set of Comp 921's or PAC 1521's.
