Default 2014-2018 6.2 truck motor differences?

I did some searching and can't find a good listing of what if any differences there are from 14-now on the 6.2 truck motors. The wife and I are looking at getting a 2018 6.2 truck and I'm heavily leaning toward brand new but want to weigh all my options and have as much info before choosing used or new. Any of you have a link with details or know specifics on these motors?

I'm assuming the current 6.2 is direct injected, if so does that make it a LT motor?

I was also trying to find out if the earlier trucks were LS3 based 6.2's with square port and port injection or if they were also direct injected.

Going by everything i have seen the 2014-present 6.2 is the L86 which is the gen 5 direct injection motor same as the LT1. It comes in the Silverado,Sierra,Yukon Denali and the Cadillac Escalade.

I have a 6.2 in my 2015 Sierra and I absolutely love it. The only thing that sucks is the torque converter in my 8-speed. Its already been replaced once and it feels like Im going to have to do it again. Fortunately 2015 had the 100k mile powertrain warranty.

Cool thanks guys. I plan on getting a 16+ for the updated front ends and ended up hearing there were a couple of issues on the 14 and 15 that were resolved by 16. The source tunes these motors all day to over 1k but is very busy so I just took his word and he didn't have time to explain so I didn't get the details.

From what I’ve found out is the 14+ 6.2 in the truck is the same as the LT1 besides basically the intake.

And the older 6.2 is essentially an ls3 besides heavier valves, VVT and some had AFM. So really it’s a lot like the L99.

I thought the trucks used a milder cam, more suited for low end torque. Correct me if I'm wrong....

That's what i've found too. Except the intake part. I'm guessing you/we call the truck motor an LTx or LT1.

I talked to Sam at AMP and he said they are all great but there were a couple of things in the 14-15 trucks that were issues (motor trans related) that were taken care of by 16 and newer. He's a busy man so we didn't get into what those items are I just took his word and ran. He makes over 1k with these new motors probably at least once a week so I'll just take his word and mover forward looking for a 16+ and the 8 speed (which will already be there with the 6.2 anyway). Besides I like the updated front end, tail lights and wireless charging on the newer trucks.

While we are here.. I saw a photo of the 19 truck that's coming out.. am I the only one that hates it?

Probably but currently I'm only concerned comparing trucks to trucks. Looking to spend a decent amount of money and want to make sure I don't buy the year model that sucks. If there is one. I don't think there is, there's a better, but there's not a suck.. basically.

I don’t think so in the new 6.2. But the older one I think so.

I think the new 6.2 truck engines put out 420HP/450lb/lb-ft, so they could very easily have "car" cams in them. Probably lose some power thru the truck exhaust system compared to the Camaro/Corvette systems

True, but I wonder if it affects the power level. I mean, we all know how good the late truck intakes are! Though, the LT-type truck intake might be a different animal.

I’m pretty sure on these motors it restricts the Hp a fair bit up top but lowers peak tq by like 500 rpm

420hp/460lb-ft. I just wish gm would put these in the lower model trucks.

Hard to say at this point doesn't seem to be much info out yet. The truck is 420hp 460 tq and the Camaro is rated 455 455. I would suspect different intake, cam, and tuning, all geared toward low end on the truck.

Y'all may like this video I watched the other day comparing the 5.3 and 6.2 in performance and mpg, surprisingly they get almost identical mpg. When the dude runs the 0-60 test with the 6.2 he giggles like a little kid. I'd love to have that feeling from a bone stock truck, and then do a few bolt ons a tune. The drag race between the 5.3 and 6.2 is really telling too. The 5.3 gets the jump and the 6.2 just runs off.

This is at 1 mile above sea level it says, imagine at sea level.

0-60mph test at 5:40

Drag race at 9:25.. earlier in the vid when they 0-60 the 6.2 it spins hard and takes off, in the drag race they baby the 6.2 and then you see it just run away, I wish they wouldn't have been a ***** with the 6.2 during the drag race. I love the in car from the 5.3 truck showing the 6.2 pulling away.

I wish the trucks had the same gear ratios. That's a large jump from the 3.23 in the 6.2 to the 3.73 in the 5.3.
