Default L83 power potential

Ok so I've seen a lot of the posts about the ZL1 and LT1/LT4 engines... What about some real world numbers for the L83 5.3.. No turbo or supercharger, naturally aspirated, with a cam swap and headers and a good tune..
I'm looking to drop one in a 69 nova that would be streetable but mostly ran at the track. It wouldnt have any cats, only large flowmasters... Still up in the air on keeping the VVT with the cam swap. Suggestions?
Also has anyone kept the factory vacuum pump and used it for a crankcase Evac?

i have tuned several l83 trucks with bolt ons and aftermarket cams... they make around 290whp stock, 315-320whp with tune and premium fuel... 350whp with boltons and 390whp with a cam. All cams come with VVT but you either need a phaser to limit the advance the retard or lock it 0 degree... i didn't make any power retarding an aftermarket cam on that engine... all runs were on a dynojet 224.

bolt ons i used are 1 7/8 headers, air aid cold air intake, and l86 intake and tb... cam i usually buy the btr l83 cam as you dont really need an aftermarket torque converter.. makes great power up to 6500 rpm. I tried one with the tsp vvt-sv cams and it made 8 hp less then the btr so i stuck to btr.

Not as great as I'd like.. that figures to be about 18% drivetrain loss going off of GM's rated flywheel hp (355 on gas) I do plan on using e85 for the added torque. We're any of your Dyno runs on e85?
really wanting to get 500- 550 flywheel hp. Is that feasible with this engine without power adders.

I think the l83 would max out just under 500 flywheel hp.. Thats with e85 and big cam, ported heads and msd intake.. I doubt it would do much over 400whp.. Maybe 420-430whp at the max.. But the engine is new and still early to judge.

For your goals.. Go with l86 or lt1 Gen v engine.. It would easily make over 500whp with ported heads cam and intake and good exhaust..

regularly do 420-430rwhp on l83s with headers, intake, e85, cam , and a 6.2 LT intake manifold

I had a few questions if you don't mind

Which headers and cam?
Using L86 throttle body or L83?
What kind of torque are you seeing?
What kind of gains are you seeing from the L86 intake? Or are you using the LT1?

You're asking a lot from a small motor. It could be done. good size cam, heads, intake, headers, high rpms and the mods needed to support that. Prob be close to 500. Want more than that, go bigger cam and more rpms. But it would be much closer to a race motor and less of a driver.

Thanks man. So you're seeing about 40 hp. Are you seeing tq gains? And are you seeing any loss of tq down low with that cam?

L83s are a nice little motors that produce great power. We have provided ported heads to LS1Cantu on here and has been 390-400whp FBO cam only truck intake, 430-450whp with our heads, ported MSD intake/Katech throttle body on E85 pretty aggressive cam that'll require some flycutting.

Thanks for the info, I need to check into his build. I looked on the website and I don't see any info on pricing/availability etc for head porting, specifically L83. Am I missing where to look on the website?

to be honest i never ported l83 heads... its just his camshaft, 1 7/8 headers, 3 inch cut out and air aid cai.

I was doing 380whp with the above combo... the l86 intake/tb is worth around 10-15hp on top of that... a c7 intake will lose torque buy probably gain after 5000 rpm...

I think 400whp is doable with a street camshaft.

just gains after 3000 rpm.. no torque loss.

Again thank you for the info. That's great to hear there is no torque loss, as you can see in my sig I pull a boat and even if I didn't I don't want torque loss, if there's a loss then efficiency is down and that range is where I drive normally so I don't want a huge MPG loss from a mild cam. Sounds like if it maintains tq down low it would probably hold mpg fairly well.

More importantly for me right now though is I'm wanting to do headers soon, is the stock exhaust real restrictive on these? How much gain are you seeing from the cutout? I'd like to find a used 6.2 (3.5") exhaust for my truck since I want it to make power but stay quiet. But how bad is the stock 2.75" exahuast?

The cut outs alone added 25-30WHP So i guess its pretty restricted without have one.
