Looking for info on 4.8's

Like my name states, I'm just here for info. Trying to figure out this very confusing family of LS engines.

Can anyone tell me (or link me) about the 4.8 truck engine? Is it an LS1? LS-anything? If not, what are the differences between it and the other Ls motors?

I've built a 347 for my old mustang that made some decent power. I decided to sell it because i lost interest. I bought a regular cab short bed 03 silverado with a 4.8 because I needed a truck to move from one house to another.

Depending on the differences between this motor an LS, I may just have some fun with it. I've worked with Ed Curtis in the past on my builds, and I think he lurks around this forum somewhere, but not sure.

I read an article that the 4.8 shortblock took around 1200whp with just the top rings opened up. What is the ideal power limit you guys are seeing with boosted applications on stock motors?

So what exactly is the 4.8?

I'm new to gen 3 engines too, but I think I can answer your questions. The main difference between the 4.8/ 5.3 and the 5.7 ls1 is that the truck engines used an iron block instead of aluminum. Secondly both the 4.8/5.3 have a smaller bore than the 5.7. The difference between the 5.3 and 4.8 is that the 4.8 has a 13mm shorter stroke. In N/A form its hard to get power out of the 4.8 in comparison to the 5.3

Thanks. So the truck engines aren't technically ls1's then, because of the smaller bores? I wonder how large the bore will go on the iron block... And what the longest stroke is...

Are there stroker kits available? What's the largest cu?

Are the heads on the 4.8 the tall skinny port heads on most ls motors, or a different shaped port?

Can I run an intake like the F.A.S.T 102mm on my heads?

I'm lurking on the forums trying to find all this stuff out for myself now...

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Gen3 eninges are kinda like the Conventional Sbc were almost all parts are transferable.

big bang theory, from hot rod mag.

That's all we needed to know when building our turbo 4.8 setup lol
