How to disable drl's?

I got the '06 Impala and have to manually turn off the daytime running lamps in the middle of the day many times upon startup. Anyone know how to disable them?

pull the fuse maybe or create a secondary switch before the light control thingy.

Mels SS Dec 2, 2008 07:12 AM

Just turn the switch.

Pull the fuse in the engine compartment fuse box. There is a DRL1 and DRL2 however there should only be a fuse in the DRL2 location. If you have them in both, you're out of luck. For some reason some cars had them in both locations and pulling one or both doesn't work, but if you only have one in the DRL2 spot that should do the trick.

Yeah, thats what I thought. Just turn it to the left and hear the chime & message on your DIC??

I always just turned the switch too, obviously not hard. But only takes 2 seconds to pull a fuse out, so why not.

Nacho SS Dec 2, 2008 09:18 PM

Why do people want to turn them off?

20SS07 Dec 3, 2008 07:48 AM

I'm sure that answer is mentioned several times in all the other DRL disabling threads, for me I just don't feel the need to have lights on at all times. If someone needs me to have lights on to see my car at 1pm in the afternoon in bright sunny skies, they should probably rethink whether they should be driving or not. Plus, once you go HID(like I have) it creates a whole different issue. I'm sure if you'd ask enough people, the majority would prefer to have them off. I wouldn't mind them AS much if they were only the parking lights or something.

I really don't care. If my lights are one during the day--its a safety feature in CA to have them on.

And that's fine. It's the same thing as anything else, some people will care, while others could care less.

Meh, it takes the same time to pull one fuse once that it does to turn a switch. For anyone that cares about having your DRL's off, to me there's no need to have to turn a switch thousands of times, when you can just eliminate them once and for all. To each is own though, both in whether you care or not, and on how you get turn them off if you do. This issue has been discussed too many times before though.

Don't mean to revive a dead thread. My 06 Monte has 2 fuses, DRL1 and DRL2 I've been wanting to disable them so I decided to see if I could. I pulled the DRL1 fuse and it did the trick! Thought this might help.

20SS07 Jan 24, 2009 01:19 PM

Very interesting, up til now all the cars with 2 fuses could not be disabled this way. I wonder why some cars only have one fuse, some of have 2, and of those that have 2 only some can be disabled by removing one of them. Great info though.

keviiinn Jan 24, 2009 01:35 PM

you had a fuse in both DRL1 and DRL2, and you only pulled out the DRL1, and it worked? the DRL2 fuse is still in?

LS4SPEED Jan 24, 2009 01:38 PM

I don't know! I installed my downpipe yesterday, and figured since I was already working on the car, I'd try to disable them. After I seen 2 fuses I figured I was screwed, but decided to give it a try anyway, went for the #1 fuse first, since it was #1, and it worked.! It shocked me to.

inssanity21 Jan 24, 2009 10:45 PM

see that didnt work for me. so i got a wiring diagram for the light system. nothing seemes to be working. i have tried multiples of tricks for the wiring. none are working. this is becuase the computer defaulst them to on. so if there is a fault before the computer then it catches it. so it has to be done after and i decided t leave it alon now

LS4SPEED Jan 25, 2009 05:33 AM

I did do it with the car running, Don't know if that had anything to do with it? Hell if I know. Meet me in Sugar Grove at the Jewel at 3:45, we'll see how the fuse boxes differ?

inssanity21 Jan 25, 2009 12:38 PM

ohhh your that close to me ay??? but i took another look at it and tryed it again. didnt work. so then i had a brilliant idea. the switch in the dash, there are switches for on off andf what no. well i crossed the on and off wire. now it tricks it to have auto light control off then you can turn it on. :)

otherwise i would love to meet you there but my car isnt able to move. its in storage. :)
