At 65k ours uses the same amount of oil as our 3800 version did. One quart between the oil change intervals, so I'm good with that.

Yes I did and yes it does, but it is a band-aid. It doesn't completely cure it but it helps.

That type of major repair for a temporary fix is definitely not for me. Maybe run a bottle of injector cleaner or something through a tank of gas every so often.

Guh. I kept checking the old threads for updates and I've been taking my car in regularly for the last 6 weeks or so. I'm about to be down 2 quarts in 3500 miles. Last week the rep said he hadn't seen any repair procedures for this engine yet. Guess he hadn't looked recently. Should be going in about Friday. I'll have to print this off. Thanks for the updates.

Do you think since he has something on record they would acknowledge the issue and cover the cost or screw him over like they do time after time.
Should be covered under 5 year/100k mile, especially since you raised the issue last year. I'd take it in and mention that.

My car is at the dealership now and all they'll tell me is that recommend an oil consumption watch.

Just got mine back from the dealership yesterday after 11 days. Turns out they couldn't get the car to read oil pressure and decided it needed a new oil pressure sensor which is located in the oil pump itself. So long story short GM covered the oil pan gasket and a new oil pump. To get mine fixed I simply went into the dealership and with the bulletin and told them my car was burning oil and they fixed it right away. I guess my dealership was a lot more lenient than others.

Got mine done today. Got new plugs and they replaced a tranny line they said was leaking. Stinks though. I guess they got some top end clean somewhere. I don't recall anyone saying if the gasket was enough, but I'll be sure to report back how it's going.

I was burning 3 quarts every 500 miles so i took it in after 500 miles and there was no oil on the dipstick so they kept it for 5 days and just replaced teh gasket, spark plugs, clean some other crap, oil, and a filter. Didn't really a think a gasket would do all this but well see when i go back there another 500 miles.

I did say i was going to leave the DOD on to see if it was going to burn any oil after they did this "fix" but i couldnt stand the way the car felt with it so i disabled it after a week of install. Before the dealer installed the gasket I had the DOD disabled and still burned oil (not as much as it did prior to the tune) but now after 2500 miles it dosent seem like its burning oil anymore. Hopefully someone who kept there DOD could chime in and see if this "fix" really does work.

Yeah, I'll be keeping an eye on it as I don't have a tuner for my car. I half want it to keep burning oil so I can get new pistons and rings. I gotta check it tonight to make sure they didn't overfill it again like they did when the testing started.

It seems to run smoother and a bit more pep. The one thing I noticed for sure is, I don't get a stinky exhaust smell when I first start the car and back up.

Just got the call on my 07 GXP, its now on watch for oil consumption as well. Every 1k miles I need to stop in and let them check the oil and document it. Nice to see this thread, gives me some guidance as to what is going on. I've never seen it smoke, does not puff on start up, and no leaks... Only had it since December with 32k, REALLY glad I got it GM certified! That is paying for itself quickly! Has 39k miles on it now.

Would it show up on a GMVIS if this work was done? I have DoD enabled, had the car now for over a month and have not had to put a drop of oil in yet. I am thinking maybe mine was done already.

Well the ls engine by design burns a little oil. Im not sure why this is but its common.
I just pulled the throttle body off my new engine and the intake is coated with oil.

Catch can
Non dod lifters with cam swap
Ls6 oil pump
Rebuilt, ported heads, with viton valve seals

Must be from the piston rings. These engines have fairly wide gaps, and are a low tension design. I don't know why since the factory redline is about 5900 and it takes forever to get there lol.

As for the factory engines, they also use a high volume oil pump which flows about 30% more oil. Im pretty sure this cause extra oil loss too!

Definitely use a catch can and run a little cleaner in concentrate form through the engine every now and then. I have to empty out my catch about twice a month, Its usally filled with a little oil and lots of water.

If I was going through that much oil, I'd be glad to let them replace the rings.

Does anyone else have a tough time getting a good reading on the dipstick? Doesn't matter what I do, one side has the oil at about a 45 degree angle on the stick and looks slightly low, but the other side is almost vertical, as in it'll show about half a quart down on one end, but there'll be a streak all the way up to the twist. Doesn't matter if I check it hot, cold, or anywhere in between.

Just average the level shown on both sides of the dipstick.

WOW. I have been searching for a GXP for a couple weeks now and this has me scared.. I don't wanna end up dealing with this. How much of a difference between taking DoD off for MPG's? I know my dealer here would probably give me a hard time
