not required until heads/cam and intake swap.
can be done easily. slot style MAF in a custom housing size of your choice. TSP, Lingenfelter, etc. all have 100mm MAF housings and PowerMAF or however its spelled has a 103mm MAF.
you WILL NEED A TUNE for ANY MAF MODIFICATIONS.
most will provide a sample MAF table as a starting guide for your tuner.

Yeah.. I tried a Jet MAF out a few years ago and, like some others, I wasn't able to realize any long-term benefit. In retrospect, I would have been better off putting the money towards an intake swap.

Aren't most of the turbo cars still on the stock MAF? This would tell me it's overkill for a bolt-on car.
But if anyone wants to try a 3.5" LS1 MAF, I've got one for sale for $55 shipped!
