Default LS4 swapping into a Montana

Hello everyone. The title pretty much says it all. Putting it in my retired family truckster 2000 Montana, complete takeout with bilsteins, 13" brakes, and all. Im not needing any swap info, got all that from the Fiero forums. Mostly just wanting to get more engine info. I plan on retaining the DoD. I am building the transmission like I do all my performance builds and of course it'll have my Limited Slip Differential.

But back to the cam. I need to know the stock cam specs so I can compare to the L76 G8GT cam. I am doing this on a budget, so used factory parts will be run as much as possible. If the L76 cam is 10deg longer at .050, it should be worth 30-40hp peak and mayb an extra 500_700rpm.

I can't go crazy bc the van weighs 4400#. I will be running 3.69 gears and single chain. I will be towing with this some. I think the key to better mileage with DoD will be the extra gearing. The V4 is way more efficient at 3000-3500rpm than it is lugging along at 2200rpm.

And of course, itll make a pass or two down the 1/4-mile track. Cuz thats what I do!

So, who knows the stock cam specs?

Yes, thats me. There's only one Pontiacjeff! Ha!

Thanks for the link, but there are some erroneous numbers there for duration. But if the 193/193 is correct, the G8 GT cam will be a good addition with 1.9 rockers. Its 200/208 and .278"/.282" at the lobe. With 1.9 rockers, that would be .530"/.536". Thats only a couple degrees shy of the LS3 cam (204/211). Car Craft put an LS3 cam in a 5.3 truck engine and it picked up 90hp at 6500!!! It only lost 18ft.lbs. at 3500. Im thinking a properly installed L76 cam would lose nothing at the bottom and gain maybe 80hp at the top. Looking at valve events, if the L76 cam was retarded 4deg, it would mimic tge LS3 cam events for intake opening and exh closing and could possibly make very nearly the same power.

Next question, what does a typical stock LS4 dyno at the wheels?

Keep in mind that the max recommended lift for the LS4 valvetrain is .525 and at that there is only a red CH left before binding on the spring/lock.

I don't know if you'd see that kind of power with that small of a cam. Especially without an intake or exhaust. And how high are you going to be revving it? I've read that 6200 is about the max people push the DoD lifters. Next up I don't know if 1.9 rockers would clear the valve cover.

To answer you question though I believe a tuned, mainly stock LS4 will put down between 260 and 270 at the wheels.

Yea man I visited your shop back in 07 or 08 some nice builds going on at the moment. I take it you read the car craft review of LS cams on the 5.3 truck motor. Some great info. By the way are you swapping intake manifods s on it or anything else while you got it out?

Brian Tooley has good price on springs - these are good upgrades without adding too much spring pressure on the DOD lifters..

Yes, I will be installing an LS2 intake and cable operated throttle body. I will be running stock exhaust manifolds, but running true duals with an x-pipe.

Default Good Stuff here with the mini van swap.....

My project will potentially be a 2005 Buick Terraza AWD.
It is the 3.5 with a 4l65 and a transfer case of some kind.....
I am hoping to do an ls4 with a small turbo.....
Any suggs or advise on the swap would be very much appreciated!!!!
How about posting some in progress pics of the Montana????
(I am happy to know that I am not the only one here thinking this way!!!)

Besides, its not really a swap... its factory fit in a U-van. Just some wiring issues. Like, uhhhhh, seven wires!

I've owned a montana at one time , I can't see why you'd want to do that.

Let me rephrase that...useful vehicle. That things gonna be slower, boatier, and uglier...and that my friend is fact.

You didn't own THIS Montana! GXP front.Bilstein suspension and 13" brakes, GXP 12" rear disc brakes, custom 1-5/16 front sway bar w urethane bushings and endlinks, custom 1" rear swaybar that links the rear axle beam to the rear frame rails aft of the suspension virtually eliminates body roll. Bilstein rear shocks (moved the ELC with air bags in the springs), re-inforced rear control arms and boxed panhard rod with urethane bushings. Aluminum front subframe. 17" GP wheels w/235/60/17's. Two-tone Thunder package interior. Class 3 trailer hitch, bolted then welded to rear frame rails. 3800 Series 2 (L36) swap in 2007. And next is this LS4 swap. I am debating using a 4T80E and an electric front mount starter instead of the 4T65 bc I intend to tow a trailer w/my 88 Grand Am drag car.
