I've been pirated!

Many months back i decided that the lights on the Imp & MC were too large and looked funny, so i bought some black vinyl and made eyelids to reduce their appearance:

Someone must have gotten a hold of my pics and used them to profit! :D I've since purchased a spare light and am painting them in this same fashion.

This how Toyota feels with Chevy pirating the headlights and grill from the Camry on these cars! :jest: I was looking at the front of my coworkers Camry SE and if the headlights and milk crate grill mesh dont look similar to what is on my Monte Carlo. I kinda wish Chevy would paint the inside of the headlights with that black chrome finish like on the sport model Camrys

Me too! I tried to get my spare headlight apart to do just that but i can't. The sealant is so freakin tough to get through!...even with heat.

kissmyss03 09-01-2006 02:14 PM

that looks ok but i like how the headlihgt looks on my car.

it is possible for two different cultures to invent the wheel.
Not saying that they did or did not copy you, but next time you have an idea try and copy right/ patent it.

Looks good.

I saw this on a cobalt over a year ago.

Awwww, steal my thunder, why don't ya?

Believe it or not i had no idea someone has done this before... :eyes: Ah, well...i did it first on the imp :)

06MonteSS 09-13-2006 08:45 AM

I actually like yours better - they wrap/cover over the top of the headlight more than those commercial ones do... yours look better. nice job!

allgood57 09-13-2006 11:07 AM

Some of the WRX's have been doing that light modification for the last 4-5yrs. I'm not saying it looks good on them, but look awsome on your 06 imp.

Richiec77 09-13-2006 03:32 PM

Nah BuffaloSS. I definitly like yours way better. It looks less tackey like the Ebay ones. It looks good on your car.

BADDLS1SS 09-15-2006 10:34 AM

Buffalo can you show a better side view of the headlight pod? i cant tell where the line ends for the vinyl on the side? The ebay one ends even with the hood...

Mike's 01WS6 09-15-2006 01:33 PM

You should make up a few sets and sell them on ebay.

Mine covers a bit of the reflector, but it looks OK. The one on eBay does line up with the hood nicely, but i think it shows too much from the side to really make an impact on the overall size of this beast of a (toyota camry) headlight.

I wish i could, but i had so much trouble making these i couldn't possibly reproduce them. I'm no vinyl expert and must have gone through 5' of the stuff before i got it 95% right. The complex curves on these things are a biatch to try to get vinyl to adhere to without bubbles. Kudos go out to vinyl (and tint) pro's...i don't have the patience for this :eyes:.

I've got one in my shed that i taped off in the shape i have now and sprayed with Krylon black plastic paint and then hit it up with some VHT niteshades to tint the rest, but i went to thick on the VHT. I messed up the paint when i cleaned off the VHT with some Goof-Off, so i gotta start from scratch again.

When you go to shape the vinyl again, use a heat gun and some low heat. You can also have a damp (slightly moist) rag so you can cool the vinyl after it's heated. That is how the tint and vinyl people get it to fit curves nicely.

You also use this technique when wrapping parts in viynl also.

Yeah, i used a hairdryer to help get out the bubbles and creases and used a wet rag to smooth it all out. Eventually i got it to where it would be acceptable, but i definitely lost my cool with it a couple times. :bang:
