Default Tire pressure Track vs Street?

I always hear that the pressure of street tires should be lowered at the track from between 20-25 depending on who is talking, to get the most bite. Yet normal pressure should be in the 30’s.

If lowering the pressure helps bite at the track, wouldn’t it also help on the street? I don’t think I’d like the pressure to be lowered for normal driving due to the drawbacks of rolling resistance and long term heat problems. But if it would work for a little pleasure drive, just a thought.

Any input?

I know roads aren't as smooth or as debris-free as a track, so by running lower pressure on the street, maybe it could f-up the sidewalls?? as well as getting worse gas mileage...

I run usually 29 psi on the street and drop it down to 18 psi at the track. For the rear I always leave it at 42 psi

42 psi . . . holy blowout batman

You will put undue stress and odd wear on your tires if you consistently run low pressure. You will get better traction on a launch, but poor cornering, as your sidewalls won't be as stiff. For street I would never drop under 25psi, track i would consider going a little lower.

I completely understand all the negatives with low pressure, just focusing on straight line traction. With the low sidewall I was trying to figure out what the real benefit might be. Another way of putting it what’s the difference between 22 vs. 30 with regard to straight line traction. I normally run the tires a bit on the high side (35 hot) for less rolling residence but not too hot so as to put the weight and wear towards the center of the tire.
