Default Octane booster

Has anyone used octane booster in their ls4 yet.I tried a bottle of it and swear it added a noticable amount of power. Before the tires would not squeal from a 15mph roll since the new tires and warmer weather 75-80 degrees. Now every time and feels like it pulls harder.

Hmmm... interesting... what kind did you use? I haven't used any (yet), but was wondering the same thing...

outlaw super concentrated

To avoid detonation, engines with knock sensors retard the spark timing at the onset of knock. Retarding spark timing or richening the air/fuel mixture to reduce knock ultimately robs power. This is why an increase in octane increases horsepower. Since the engine's knock threshold is effectively raised with higher octane fuels, spark timing is not retarded. This allows combustion and charge expansion to occur so that more force is put into the power stroke. Bottom line: Higher octane fuel only helps you make more power if your engine is at the verge of detonation (whether you know it or not).

Got that from european car magazine.

I wonder how much more timing we can get using it? I logged the stock Diablo tune and started adding a little advance and didn't far before the knock retard kicked in. Even without the extra timing I'm sure on a hot day we already get some KR.

you really won't be able to add much timing past 26 deg. There were a couple threads based on the LS6 engine (LS4 uses he LS6 head) where J-Rod went up to 26 deg and then past it to find max power with timing. Even with race fuel, anything past 26 didn't yeild power and going farther to about 30-32 deg actually lost power.

So there isn't too much to be gained in these engines with timing advancement unlike the older SB/BB chevy's. It has everything to do with how efficient the combustion chamber is for the engine design.

But that artical is correct that if you have KR you can gain some power by increasing Octain to a point.

yeah, I added a bottle of STP Octane Booster (uses MMT) to my tank the other day, and it seems to pull harder and accelerate quicker.... could be all in my head though cuz that's what I WANT it to do

i am not a big fan of octane boosters. if it advertises 10 points, you just went from 93 octane to 94 octane. if you figure in cost, it may be cheaper and more affective to mix in race fuel.

try using something called liquid horsepower. i use that on my camaro plus 93. not sure if that'd be good for your motor and stock tune though.. might be too much octane...?

Or you could just add some seafoam. . .not what it is advertised for, but works pretty well

How much race fuel would it take to go from 93 to 94 octane? In 18 gallon tank I think 1 gallon and how much is race gas?Octane booster is about $5.00.

I think you're feeling phantom HP. If you can feel any difference between 93 and 94 octane then you are something special.

It's not the octane that add's power, it's the fact that my timing isn't retarded with 94 but is retarded with 93 due to the ecm protecting the engine from detonation.which is probably because of the aftermarket tune.

IMHO the Octane boosters are useless for everyday use. As posted above, when they claim it increases 5 points of Octane (as in the 104+ stuff), that would be 0.5 Octane number, i.e. going from 91 to 91.5 (at $4-$5 a bottle!). If you are that close to the edge on timing, temp variations, humidity, load, etc are going to push you over the edge on occasion anyway. Time to back off the timing. If you are looking for every edge you can get on the track and advance the timing for each visit...well maybe it is worth a few horsepower (per an old article I read a while back in Hot Rod). I show no detonation (aside from some slight tip-in knock on WOT) on my Diable DOD tune on 93 though, perhaps the non-DOD tune is more aggressive on the timing?

I did the octane booster ONCE and DID notice a difference, but like 06 SS said, not for everyday driving. Then I put 3 gallons of 104 race fuel in her for the same price about of a bottle of O.B., and got TONS of more pull and alot of tire spin in the 20 mph or more area. I check with a service tech how races also, he said our cars can handle more fuel like the race fuel as long as you do like I did,......3 gal of 104, the rest 92 and BAM, POWER. I had my tune set at -7 slope and +6 PE.

WOOHOO!!! found Sunoco 100 octane about 20 minutes from my house... figure I'll mix some of that with some 93, and make myself some 94 or 95 octane to get a little more pep and eliminate the occasional KR I get...

"Sunoco 260 GT 100 is a street legal, unleaded gasoline designed for high performance street cars, muscle cars, classics, street rods, motorcycles, karts and marine applications. With a 100 octane rating, Sunoco 260 GT will allow significantly increased boost levels in supercharged or turbocharged applications.

Sunoco 260 GT contains no metallic compounds to harm catalytic converters or oxygen sensors.

It contains a comprehensive additive package for greater engine protection and reduced fuel system deposits. Sunoco 260 GT is also compatible with virtually all two-stroke synthetic and mineral based motor oils."
