383 tear down, more damage than I thought

Well I finally took my 383 apart because it was making a knocking noise. So this is what I found I wish I just had a bad rod. Notice anything missing in the first Pic.

This is the damage that TB screw caused

And this is what it looked like when it was spit out.

BTW I need a stock lt1 head bad I will buy a set of stokers if someone has any.

JasonShort 10-10-2008 05:11 PM

Sorry to see that :( Those situations are never fun.

Jason

Good call, I think I am about to do the same...

chavez885 10-10-2008 07:10 PM

HOLY SHIT...i'd be pissed

halucinator 10-10-2008 07:19 PM

Wow thats crazy. I've seen that happen a couple of times. Are you rebuilding and just getting a new piston and head or what?
I'm guessing your running forged pistons because hypos have been known to self destruct with something tiny like a screw.

James Montigny 10-10-2008 08:26 PM

Damned, I've heard of that happening to a few motors now ...

fergymoto 10-10-2008 08:38 PM

Was the bore hurt? Why do you want a new head? It's not that beat up. Check the gasket areas with a machinists straight edge, check the valves and seats if if theres no deform or crack run it.

As good a time as any to have them "Smoothed"

It is hard to tell from the pic but the head is cracked and bent up at the water jacket.

IH8FORD 10-10-2008 09:16 PM

I am going to get one new piston, they were off the shelf Ross Racing Forged pistons. The bore looks fine.

IH8FORD 10-11-2008 10:02 AM

I am thinking of buying a head and cam package at the first of the year from AI or either converting to an LS1, which for some reason I just want to keep the Lt1 in the car.

Tireburnin 10-11-2008 12:09 PM

That is one of the worst feelings. It couldn't have "just" been a bearing or something, it had to go and tear everything up.

Good luck getting it running.

Speed Density 10-11-2008 12:10 PM

Holy hell, that sucks!

Its crazy what things do when they get stuck insided cylinders, good luck getting it back together man.

Tony.

riceburnerZ28 10-11-2008 01:02 PM

I never heard of such a thing happening cause of a throttle body. Hope everything works out.

C5042081 10-11-2008 03:25 PM

wow thats crazy, look on the bright side you have a fresh rebuild if you decided to keep it

Mattsz28 10-11-2008 04:02 PM

Ive got a set of ported stockers I'd let go pretty cheap if you want. They came off a 383 that trapped 118 in the quarter the only time I had it down there on 2.73 rear gears. I switched to a set of ported darts :-) Send me a PM if your interested.

IH8FORD 10-11-2008 04:05 PM

I have decided I am going to do a nasty NA lt1 build since I already have a mean LS1 car. I always enjoyed outrunning ls1 with cars with lt1 power. I will start with the build at the first of the year after I finish the tunning on the 99SS.

AChotrod 10-11-2008 04:17 PM

Sweet! Glad to hear your keeping it an LT1. Sucks about that damn screw though.

ThoR294 10-11-2008 04:22 PM

wow... of all things a throttle body screw... im sorry man thats really lame.

NightTrain66 10-11-2008 04:33 PM

crummy deal.

I have heard of that happening a cpl times as well.

Lloyd

Jditlfm 10-11-2008 04:42 PM

I made sure i locktighted mine before i put the Throttle body on. That sucks

Hind sight is 20/20.

AKAFRED 10-11-2008 06:24 PM

my tb has the back of the screws mushroomed.. they will never come out without the use of a dremel.

Beaflag VonRathburg 10-11-2008 07:23 PM

Mine just broke off when I went to take the damn things out. I don't see how a stock one could ever come out. I have a set of LS1 pistons that a guy had the same thing happen to.

SoxXpupPeT 10-11-2008 07:40 PM

all bolts are or should be mushroomed. from carbs to TB's that sucks real bad man. if it was just the piston thatd be one thing. but that head is fairly fucked :\

Jditlfm 10-11-2008 09:29 PM

BBk should cover it. LOL That would be a dream.

That TB has been on there since about 2001, and as you can tell we have ported on it a little.

GASH1313 10-23-2008 12:17 AM

A screw took out my motor also just diferent screw, it shatterd the stock piston into about 5 peices and the car only has 29,000 miles to top it off.

xx_ED_xx 10-23-2008 09:57 AM

kia sorrentos etc with the 3.5 liter do something similar a metal bushing for the wot butterflies flys out and does the same thing. makes a hell of a ticking noise

Ls1Bait 11-04-2008 07:12 PM

To bad to hear man..

Is the stock TB have that issue????

and screw????

CamaroRacing12 11-04-2008 07:14 PM

wow thats unlucky... sorry man

FASTFATBOY 11-05-2008 07:01 PM

Have that head repaired, it aint hurt THAT bad. I have seen a WHOLE lot worse repaired and ran just fine.

Just gotta find someone who KNOWS what they are doing.

Loctite those TB screws, and then take a center punch to them on the backside 2 or 3 times to flair out the end of the screw. Be careful not to bend the shaft.

TwoFast4Lv 11-05-2008 09:57 PM

There IS a reason NOT to run a cheap TB ;)

Sorry for your lose man!

JonCR96Z 11-05-2008 10:15 PM

Which TB do you recommend?
