Where to get a motor?

I can't take watching my Trans Am sit in the driveway anymore. I'm literally having dreams about driving it. The motor blew a head gasket a while back and I didn't catch it in time, so the motor seized.

Where can I get an LT1? I check the classifieds on this board and I check Ebay from time to time, but I've had shit luck as of late. I'm not looking to spend a fortune.

Also, when I get said motor, what should I do to it prior to dropping it back in the car? I'm on a budget, so a head and cam swap is out of the question.

Get a junkyard b-body LT1, usually fairly inexpensive even at lower mileage.

Maybe put fresh valvesprings on it and get the pcm reprogrammed.

I have had better luck and results with junkyard motors than a lot of guys have with "reputable" built motors so I would strongly discourage you from buying one of the cheap "built" motors.

Where are you located?

There was a complete stock lt1 taken out of a 94 f-body on ebay. It only had 50mi on it. Guy wanted 2700.00 for it.

Never even thought of that. Good call. If I can get one for $500 or so, that's right in my price range. Swap on some aluminum heads and bolt ons, reprogrammed PCM and I'm set.

I have a B Body 95 LT1 intake to oil pan with the optispark on it. Needs a cam. You can just swap your cam in there. Has a spun rod bearing. I can sell it to you as is or I can rebuild you a shortblock or you can send me your heads and cam and Ill build you a complete motor. I have 10 years experience as an automotive machinist. I am in SOuth Jersey. Might be on Long Island this weekend. Let me know if intersted....PM me...Thanks

I would not bother swapping the aluminum heads on it unless they are ported or you are doing a sizable cam at the same time. The worst things about the iron heads are they are somewhat lift limited due to pressed studs and tall guides and they are heavy.

I would much sooner save the aluminums and look at having them inspected and ported as budget permits. By leabving the iron heads on now you save downtime later.

Have to consider the iron heads were designed a year or two later with more lessons learned, so in stock form flow a little more than your 95 aluminum heads. They were also designed for a longer service life and blown head gaskets are almost completely unheard of with them. Supposedly the aluminum head setup had a target service life of 200K but the iron 300K since the iron head stuff was also sold as law enforcement and fleet use.

I'm going to need some time as I'm already in debt due to getting screwed on buying a used car. Once I'm out though, school is payed for and my insurance is payed, I'm definitely going for it.
