Date with a dyno (first time ever)

I am going to get my car dyno'ed before I start doing anything to it. Anyone want to take a guess at what I should expect?

I am hoping for 280rwhp but being an A4 (3.23s) I am thinking thats a stretch.

Only thing I am changing between now and then is new plugs and wires (TR55GPs).

So what do you guys think with the stuff I have done (not much) in my sig?

Supposed to go to the dyno on 6 Dec, so once I do Ill post back up and let you all know what it ended up pulling.

I have seen 280hp stock good luck man. what kind of dyno is?????????

jaywalkersw 11-23-2008 10:37 PM

I believe its a Dynojet 248x. 280rwhp? on a bone stock auto? That gives me a little bit more hope of breaking that, but from what I have been reading on here seems like these cars are all over the map stock with power output give or take 15-20rwhp from one to another. So who knows maybe Ill get lucky and have one on the higher end of the scale.

280 isn't going to happen. I hate to tell you.

Most autos dyno in the 240 area. Some are low, some are high. I was low at 231whp. 280 simply doesn't happen.

MonmouthCtyLS7 11-24-2008 08:24 AM

Yea your definately not going to see 280 w/ an auto...shoot for 240-260

Toronto_LT1 11-24-2008 08:37 AM

i would guess no more than 250 horses to the wheels.
good luck.

Z-RATED94 11-24-2008 10:01 AM

My guess would be 238rwhp. Don't get your hopes UP, that comes later, when the bank account goes DOWN.

sweet-94z28 11-24-2008 10:35 AM

Mine was 265rwhp through just a built trans with 4.3 V6 torque convertor (2200ish stall speed). They had the convertor locked and other than the trans, the car was bone stock. I'd say 250hp.

So the average range on a completely 100% stock auto is somewhere around 240rwhp +or- 10?

Wow I thought it was a little higher than that.

What is the average range on a bone stock M6?

w/o headers you will prob be somewhere in the 250-260 range. My advice is to put the dyno $$$ towards some LT's and then that 280 number will be in sight :D

most common with your mods would be close to 250-260 with an auto. If your car runs super strong might get a few more ponies!!!!

Its only going to cost $45 for 3 pulls and I like to know what I am starting out with before I start modding.

I have only had the car for a little over a year and the previous owner (I am the 3rd owner) hadn't modified the car at all but he told me the original owner had. He thought the pushrods had been replaced with hardened ones but he couldn't remember exactly what all had been done. He handed me a superchips handheld programmer (its crap so I took that off the car when I got it). After digging around on the car some I noticed an aftermarket catback (looks like a flowmaster to me, but I can't tell for sure).

The car was making a ticking sound from the day I got it and thanks to LS1tech and some good advice I decided it was probably my rockers out of align on one of my cylinders (#1 specifically). So a friend and I decided to adjust it and when I took the valve covers off I noticed a shiny set of Crane gold 1.6RR sitting there much to my surprise. We tightened the rocker up...noise went away.

The fact that the rockers had been replaced makes me wonder if anything else had been. Doesn't sound cammed (but also didn't sound like it had different rockers except for the annoying ticking). This is primarily why I want to get it dyno'ed before I start making more plans in case there are any other surprises I don't know about.

I am leaning towards getting some mid-tubes (emission reasons) and around the same time get a mail order from either Ion or Bryan.

My inital goal is I want to get to around 300rwhp, but for right now I might be already making that if there is some mild cam in the car that I am unaware of. Never been to a track or dyno with it to find out. The car feels strong but I haven't driven any other LT1s (or any other car with something bigger than a V6 for that matter) to compare it with.

Thanks for all the input...keep the guesses coming.

FYI Pacesetter makes a stainless emissions LT header

M6 is 10-15hp more roughly IMO

I know, but their LTs require you to move the cats from the stock location, but their Mids keep the cats in the stock location.

Yeah, just wanted ya to know there was a Emissions LT out there. Good luck with your dyno man! Post your number up when done.

I say 250ish , most people start with boltons before they decide to cam it, so I would not think it would be cammed , and even if it was a mild cam without the suporting mods like headers and such you wouldnt be at 300rwhp, but good luck.

there only 275 crank hp stock so you do mean crank right because you cant get 280 rwhp from a 275 hp engine , but I wish we could..lol

Well, the later years had 285 and 305. So with a motor dyno it's quite possible.
