Default Crank Pulley

I finally had the time/weather to get out and work on my car today and had a friend helping so everything was going great--got the crank pulley off (used a powerbuilt puller/installer), got the old opti off, new opti on, and then it kinda hit a brick wall. I had gone inside to start scraping the old gasket off the water pump and was having my friend put the crank pulley back on and come to find out he got it on but didn't line the bolt holes up. He thought he could rotate it once it got on there....not the case at all. Now it is on there to where I can't get the puller back on because the hub is right there where the puller grabs on at.

I need advice on how to get this thing off so that I can get the bolt holes lined up right...please advise.

Use a claw puller. You should be able to borrow one from AutoZone, O'reilly's, or any other local parts store for free.

you could lightly tap it with a hammer. when you go to put it on again just line it up and use the 3 bolts to draw the pulley back on. just evenly tighten the 3 bolts until its tight. it doesnt take much force to get it on or off.

I have a claw puller can't get it to latch on because the hub is right in the middle where the claws latch.

I tried using a rubber mallet on it to tap it off...but all I can really do it bounce it back and forth it's not really coming off any.

autozone also sells this type of puller. instead of the claws you thread in 3 long bolts to the pulley. should come right off. theres holes already tapped on the pulley made specially for this kind

I actually have a puller like that sitting right next to me...Just wasn't sure how to use it to get the pulley off ...It just made sense to me.

Is the pulley asymmetrical or will the 3 bolt holes line up with the hub any which way?

The bolt holes are asymmetric and can only go on one way.

The fit from the hub to pulley should be loose enough that you don't always need a puller. So when you get it back off clean up the center bore so you don't end up in this situation again.

It is common to need a puller after it has been on a long time though, dirt and rust causing a tight fit.

It can only go on one of three ways. Like 96 said, clean up the hub with a wire brush so it slips on and off easily.

Not on 1995 and earlier pulleys, there aren't.
