Mine had wear at 32k so I changed it, but i havent heard of a failure except the above post and thats not confirmed. I also just pulled apart a 20k motor and it looks perfect. Chain had some slack( not even close to enough to come off) but i think its normal.

even at $250 bucks it is cheaper to do cloyes double roller and an ewp!!!!
200 for ewp and 20-35 for cloyes chain! What worries me is why your builder recommends 20w-50? I take it he is an old school guys who has yet to grasp the much smaller oil galleries in modern engines? unless your oil galleries are ported 5w30 is the thickest oil you want to run! if you go with 20w50 with stock gallery's you will take alot of extra time to get cold oil to your valvetrain causing premature failure. And I have never heard of a stock timing set up failing due to too many rpms of too much power! I went double roller because it was 20 bucks and I will be running an ewp!

if you do some research many engine builders recommend 20w-50 vr1. Golen is one and I could name more, but no need. My golen shortblock has a lifetime warranty only with use of 20w-50 vr1.

Would you classify these guys as old school with no grasp on newer engines?

I put a Cloyes replacement in my LT-1 about 30,000 miles ago. So far, so good....

Note: Cloyes does not make a double roller for a stock, '95-up, LT-1.

This isn't the first time I've heard of that particular brand breaking. Just get a OEM chain and call it good.

BUT....who makes the OEM chain?? It wouldn't surprise me to find out that Cloyes is an OEM supplier. Look at it this way, how many years did Chevy produce the LT-1? 4 or 5, right? Therefore, how many of them are out there, compared to the "regular" SBC that was produced from 1955 to 1993-94?

It doesn't make sense for 2-3 manufacturers to gear up to make such a limited application part. The OE timing set I took out of my '96 LT-1 had a cam gear that had 3 "spokes". The Cloyes gear I replaced it with, was solid. The pictures of the "heavy duty, LT-4" timing set, as shown in the GMPP catalog, show a solid cam gear. Is it a Cloyes set? Maybe......
