Default Ignition coil for LT1

Is there a better coil for the LT1's? MSD, Accel, etc.?
Or is the original GM coil just as good?

I still run an OEM coil, but to my knowledge the 96-97 have a better coil then 93-95. We still have a stock coil on a customers 95 that goes 9.7x's.

I do not think an MSD is needed, but it can't hurt replacing an old coil either.

X2 on the 96+ coil, its a bit better of a piece and costs a little less I believe, there is couple threads on how to change the wiring over, I did it last year, noticed no difference at the time but if you need one it can't hurt, only other thing is you will have to change the single wire to the opti and find the correct type of connector for the coil harness plug, I deleted my air pump at the same time and it just happens that the air pump plug is the correct connector...

i just recently put in an accel coil and i noticed jus a little difference in throttle response and quicker start-ups. i think u would probably noticed the same with an msd coil but either way ull notice a slight difference from the stock coil.

I dont think you will really be able to notice a difference. Maybe a slight increase in throttle response. If I was going to replace a stock worn out one I would get one. I have an extra Accel coil for 93-95 LT1's if your interested. PM me.

I got the MSD coil simply because I'm too lazy to even want to attempt to change the wiring over for a 96 and up coil. Didn't notice a difference but it does match my MSD opti I guess.

I've heard that the OEM coil is better than any other coil. make sure to space the coil from the head with a couple of nuts to allow air to circulate around the coil and ICM.

I've been using an MSD Blaster coil for 8 years - same one with zero problems and great results.

I've had the MSD "replacement" coil in my car for about 7 years, or so. Works well....

I ran a Nology coil without fail for a few years. great spark energy and better throttle response....

great for nitrous usage as well....

can't hurt to use an MSD blaster either...

If you're seriously in the big boy neighborhood it's an HVC II or nothing.... that's what pro stock cars run and it's what I got..... but you need at a very least i believe a 7 series MSD ignition to power it.... it'll light up a small city....

The 96-97 single connector coils are as good as most aftermarket ones. The 93-95 dual connector coils could benefit from an upgrade.

I've had an MSD coil. It was okay I guess. Now I run a new OEM coil from GM, and I have no problems. OEM **** for the win
