Default Best LT1 mod ever for less than 40 bucks????

The rag joint eliminator. I just put this on and it is great not having the play in my steering wheel. All my suspension is in good shape and it helped even more to not have that wiggle room in my steering anymore. Thank You Unbalanced Enigineering.

I would've just bought the LS1 steering shaft lol Me and the_merv tossed around the idea after he posted a thread with his Gen III swap and had pics of the 2 shafts. I commented on how it had no rag joint (u-joint) and other than that looked identical to the LT1's.

Good to hear that it's what I hoped for not having that rag joint anymore.

i did mine a while back, $40 for a very nice part or 5 bucks for a shaft and 10 minutes of mod time. hmmmm
first pic i copied from "the Merv" thanks bro! the other pics are installed on my car,if you look close at the joint where the shaft comes through you will see i grinded splined shaft slid it back in and tac welded it..some people have said that the shaft was a direct bolt on but the 2 people that told me that had '97s so on that i am sure '96s and older require this mod to the Ls1 shaft prior to installing to an Lt1 car.

I thought the LS1 steering shaft threw the steering wheel off 90 degrees?

I think you, or Merv had mentioned that before, and our/my solution was to drill a new hole and put a bolt through it to fix that. It's similar to what you do on lifted trucks if you don't get a longer steering shaft, you extended it almost till it falls off and drill a hole and bolt in some steel plates over it, or put a collar over it in a similar fashion.

I did read it, but your thoughts were all jumbled together I hate to be a grammar ****, but with the lack of grammar, it left me stumped. Why did you have to tack weld it?

the tack weld was done to keep the splined shaft from slippng down. the factory had the splined end spread back essentially doing the same thing.
pictionary works

Steering shaft replacement on the Lt1 car using the shaft from an Ls1 car is a simple swap however it does require a small modification.
Remove the Lt1 shaft from your car and place it near the Ls1 shaft for comparison, you will notice the clocking position is not the same and that is what we will be covering here.
To remove the knuckle at the column end of the shaft will require a peanut grinder or dremel tool with a cut off disk or possibly a small grinding bit to remove the small lip that protrudes through the knuckle. Once this is done you will need to tap the knuckle off of the splined shaft with a small hammer, and then re-clock the knuckle onto the splined shaft in the same position the Lt1 shaft is in, slightly tapping the knuckle onto the splined shaft allowing roughly 1/8” to protrude through. At this time you should test fit the shaft to the column shaft and then to the steering rack. Now if you like where it sits and will allow you to remove the shaft as the original did, you can now tack weld the small portion of the splined shaft that is visible through the knuckles base.

for those of you who don't have access to a welder and small grinder, the rag joint eliminator sure is cheap. all you need is a couple of drill bits, a drill and a hammer/punch. I tried the ls1 shaft like 96lt1m6 tried to describe and said F'this, just bought the eliminator it took me 30 minutes.

over time the original rag joint will get slop in it due to wear. either yours is not bad yet or you are just used to the way it feels!
the mod gets rid that bulky ragjoint end. As i stated before the unbalanced performance replacement piece is great. i just did mine like i did cause i did not want to wait and my ragjoint got really bad.

I've got the rag joint eliminator, it made it better but still not perfect. What else causes play in steering?
