Default Splay Caps and Timing Sets

What splayed caps and timing sets are you running here? I need part numbers so I can get some stuff on order. I'm about to start the N20 build and I plan to splay the bottom end. Also, I'm pretty sure I have the GenII opti spark. Can I run a regular SBC Double Roller timing set since the opti is driven by the cam dowel??

You will have to switch to an electric water pump if you don't already have one in order to run a SBC timing set. If you do that then you can run any timing set for '87 up hydraulic roller small blocks.

There is considerable machining needed to splay the bottom end. Why not let the machine shop select them for you?

I was planning on dropping off the parts I needed for the build. Just curious what everyone else was using.

I'm using a Cloyes 3151 timing set for 95-97 f-bodies. My splayed caps are from Eagle.

Do you have a part number for the Splay Caps...

are they the same for the LT1 as a standard 350 SBC?

Thanks

Matt

I run the Pro-Gram Engineering splayed caps....... I think they are the best splayed caps on the market....

and as previously mentioned you need an EWP to run a double roller... Most run the comp cams one AFAIK....

Yes, keep the crusty old machinists happy LMAO
But do discuss the pros and cons of your options.
You don't want to cheap out on something that critical.
Expect $300-500 in labor to machine for and set the caps.

also using the pro-gram splayed caps. very high quality and decent price. they said not to be used with a stock dipstick but it worked fine after a little cutting on the tube and stick.

Yes, very important. The caps block the dipstick hole.
The stock dipstick has to be cut short and you can never use a full dipstick with the motor running again.
Otherwise it will end up pushed to the side and over into the crank. (that would be bad)
I run a dipstick handle-only to cap the tube when the motor is running and keep a full dipstick in the trunk for checking oil when it's off.

Hey Guys Thanks for all the help. How much power do think the block is capable of making with it being Splayed?

~750, assuming you have good rod bolts and head studs to keep pressure under control,
the block becomes the limitation at that point. A little hardblok will solve that problem though

I have the Pro Gram Caps. You can bend the dipstick around the cap and run the stock stick. I have done this on 2 LT1's and it has worked perfect. It does not come near the crank.

Just a thought.
