Default Cooling Fan Fuses Blowing

I did the manual cooling fan switch mod and it has worked fine the last year and a half. Lately my fuses have been burning out. Check relays and wiring and everything checks good. Anyone else having this problem? Can't seem to find part number for Cooling Fan Switch or Sensor, anyone also know these?

There isn't a "cooling fan switch" or sensor. The computer controls the fans based on temperature and other things like a/c usage. Provide some details (like year and such) about your car when you want help (better yet, make a sig with info). Not everything is the same from year to year. We also don't know what manual switch configuration you used, so trying to help is a little hard.

Yea I want to know what you did for the Fan Switch Configuration..the easiest and simplest way is to splice into the Signal Wires that are going into the Fuse Box and put a Switch on them, then ground it.

Basically like so..this is the way I did it.

I like my fan switch diagram better. You only need one switch.

It's a 97 SS, 6spd hardtop. I've got a double throw switch with inline resistors so the computer isn't suppose to trip a code. I found the mod on here and it worked for a while. Is there anyway to run the switches and completely cutout the computer?

You used my instructions. It's really the best way, IMHO. It retains computer function and gives manual control. You could do it without the computer being involved, but you would want to put your own relays in just like the factory ones. More wiring and more work. The computer would no longer be able to control the fans. I don't see any advantage to that.

Are you sure it is not your AIR pump that is causing the fuse issue? I think the fans and pump are on the same fuse.

You know what, now that i think about it, the AIR pump was making some high pitch noises awhile ago then quit working. I don't know if their tied together but I will look into that. I wired everything just like your instructions and it worked great. Just now I'm popping the fuse left and right and can't locate a short anywhere. I'm just hoping it's not the ECM. Thanks for replying!

Unplug the AIR pump for a while and see if your trouble continues.

Thumbs up

Removed the relay and and jumped pins as per the Haynes manuel and the wire nearly welded it self to the plastic! I guess I found the short... Took her for a test drive and the fuse is no longer a problem. Thanks for the help!

Cool, glad you got it.

How thin of a wire did you use?

It was 10 gauge wire. Smoked on contact and just about welded itself to the terminals. I just left the relay unplugged and it's working fine again. Time to ditch the Air pump and get a supercharger!
