ok well acctually on formula's, z28's, and ws6's. you could get either 2.73's or 3.23's on the auto's anyway. i beleve all m6's get 3.42's. i beleve the option for 3.23's is like gu8 or something like that. my car had 3.23's, so.... thats all i know. it doesnt anymore though... im not 100% sure on that though, so dont quote me on that code.

GU5 is code for 3.23
I think what he is asking is what if the car came with a certain gear ratio and might have been swapped out. Not sure if you can tell without opening it up. Good excuse to change the fluid.

Yes, all '94-'97 M6 cars cam with 3.42 gears ('93 M6 cars came with 3.23 gears)
A4 cars had either 2.73 or 3.23 gears depending on what code it has. GU5 for 3.23's.
The only way to know what gears you have if they were changed is to look at your rpm at a give mph in top gear. There are gear/mph calculators online that can help you determine what final rear end gearing you have.

Can't he just jack up the rear end so both rear tires are in the air, put the car in nuetral, mark a spot on the DS and have a buddy turn the rear wheels one full turn and watch how many times the DS spins, if it spins say 2 full turns and another 3/4ish of a turn its 2.73's. If it spins 3 full and 1/4ish turns its 3.23's etc....
