I hate opti's

opti took a crap friday night, is a msd opti better for high rpm? most i am turning is about 6400. got an old used ebay opti in for now but i know it's not going to last:bang:

Im in the same situation, I have a used one on "for now" Although I have a brand new in the box GM performance parts vented opti that I bought for my car before discovering it was a non vented if u are interesterd.

crypt Oct 18, 2009 10:39 PM

thanks for the offer man, but i have converted to a vented opti so i can use a double roller. thinking about going with the msd but some say it's no better than a oem delco:confused:

whats ur car doing that u know its the opti??? im having problems at high rpms, falls on her face and pops like hell jw if ur having these problems at times it shuts off on me.

crypt Oct 19, 2009 10:20 PM

changed the opti yesterday and it's running for now. i had a high rpm miss that i fought with for about 6 months, thought it was the opti, turned out to be the icm. this time it was the opti. have went through 4 opti's and every time it started missing, popping, and backfireing then just died and would not start. no spark at all. hope this helps

ALEXZ28 Oct 20, 2009 04:05 PM

i have a new icm, she feels like shes not getting spark right now i barely have power. and shes missing, popping, and backfiring then at time dies but it does start back up

i had the same problem with mine and now i replaced the cap n rotor and have no spark car wont start...what could it be....btw whats the icm??

crypt Oct 20, 2009 08:21 PM

did you check fuel pressure, plugs and wires? sounds like it could be the opti though. (ignition control module) located right next to the coil bolted to the same plate.

You guys might consider the ICM relocation mod. It involves spacing the ICM away from the left side head so it can run cooler. Most use some washer to do this. Shoebox has a right up on it on his site.

The stock OPTI worked for me. :)

Mmmmhmmmm, me too.

Also did the ICM modification. Plenty of space, and saw a 30 degree drop in temperature using an IR thermometer.

I had a MSD Blaster Coil, spaced the stock 100k+ ICM, and used a stock OPTI that had about 40k on it, was replaced in '01..I bought my car in '05..and had no issues going to 6500.

After tossing up the idea of a dynaspark, msd opti, LTCC, LSX computer conversion, and all the other options...I decided to just save a lot of money and hassle and just get another genuine OEM opti base with an MSD cap & rotor like I had before. This deep into it money was not an issue, just reliability and simpleness.

I have heard great things about the dynaspark, but the OEM piece is hard to beat for the price. Along with the more robust MSD cap/rotor I feel that it is plenty for most builds.

wrd1972 Oct 20, 2009 10:22 PM

If I ever waste my current opti by popping the rotor, I am going to try the MSD cap and rotor.

FASTFATBOY Oct 21, 2009 04:29 PM

My factory opti has been to 7000 MANY MANY times, all I did was loctite the rotor screws.

crypt Oct 21, 2009 08:07 PM

right now i have an :barf:allignition opti for now, but on my next one i am unsure on wich one to get. oem or msd? does msd have a warranty? i'd like to have a backup on hand

FASTFATBOY Oct 21, 2009 10:17 PM

GM part has a 12 month 12000 mile warranty.

slingshot928 Oct 21, 2009 10:48 PM

I spaced my icm off of the head, seems to be running a little better, all it takes is a couple of washers...when it sits on the head and you do not have any dielectric grease on the plate, the icm will heat up and cause problems. I have only spun my car to about 6200, and everything works well.

crypt Oct 22, 2009 07:41 PM

thanks for the input guys

ALEXZ28 Oct 23, 2009 09:05 AM

question... can the opti make your car run like if its missing or skipping'????? bc i looked at my wires all good, new plugs new coil.. only thing left would be opti..
