Default Gears Whining

Okay so I think my gears are bad or put in wrong. They whine. The faster I go the louder it gets. When i push on the accelerator it gets considerably louder. I bought the car about 3 months ago. I knew it had some problems but the idiot couldn't tell me what gears he put in. He could only tell me that they were "high performance gears." I don't want to race it just drive it on the highway so i was thinking 3.08 gears. If it is the gears how much would it cost me to put a new rear end in? Also could it be my transmission? Which in the end is my worst fear at this point in time.

"Performance gears" tend to whine. Now how loud is loud...you can have the gears adjusted and they might get quieter but if they aren't stock they will never be 'quiet'.

I would suggest finding the ratio you want from someone changing to after market and have used stock gears put in OR buy stock ratio you want.

They are pretty loud sometimes. Some days it worse than others. I am looking at the 3.08 ratio. Is that good for highway? He set them for drag racing.. I was kind of shocked he couldn't tell me the ratio or anything. I am scared ill be driving and my rear end will go and im screwed. I drive 40 mins back and forth 3 days a week so i am looking for something that's gonna save gas. Also not cost me and arm and leg to put in. With that said, I want them quieter.

If your gear whine is that audible, they're set up wrong, period.

A gear swap will cost you around $400 - $600 installed properly, materials and labor included.

You don't indicate what you have now (A4 or M6). If you want to change gear ratios, you're going to need to have the PCM reprogrammed to ensure the accuracy of the speedometer.

Aftermarket gears are LOUDER than stock. That is not my opinion it is from gear experts.

Put after market gears on a stock exhaust and tell me if you can hear the difference.

You get stock gears close and they are silent...if after market gears are off a LITTLE you can hear them (and guess what happens when they wear).

7.5" rearend are especially hard to setup. Don't believe me ask someone who does it for a living thats where my information came from.

Ask if he GUARANTEES the gears will be as quiet as stock. No one I have heard of will give you that guarantee and back it...

Now why would after market gears be louder?

Is the material hardness the same in stock gears and after market? If one is harder do you suppose that could make a difference in sound?

Edit:

Wine is an alcoholic beverage Whine is a noise or a sound.

Look up 'quiet' then compare to whine. Something may not be 'quiet' but that doesn't mean it is whinning.

I could easilly roll my eyes but why bother...

I have been through 4 ring and pinions, all set up by the same shop.

OEM set - dead silent.
One set of GM Motive - dead silent.
One set of Richmonds - very slight whine, essentially inaudible.
One set of US Gear/Strange - dead silent.

All of these were through a stock catback with a Flowmaster muffler.

Mine whine pretty noticeable from 40-55mph. Mine were likely installed a little wrong (paid a guy $150 that was recommended to me from a friend). He also told me just to drive 50 miles on them and let her rip.

I've heard since then that you need several cycles for them to break in correctly.

For example, 10 mile cruise. Stop, let them cool down
10 miles. Stop, let them cool down
40 miles. Stop, let them cool down

Is that more correct?

first off, what kind of car do you have? I noticed you said you where considering 3.08 gears?? Is the car a corvette? thats kind of a weird gear ratio for a GM 7.5...

3.73's in an A4(auto) and 4.10's are commong for performance in M6(manual) cars...usually people have 2.73's or 3.23's for streetability/MPG reasons in Fbody's...

factory Fbodys had 2.73 or 3.23 gears in autos, and 3.42 gears for a manual...

Thanks for the advice guys. I am not to educated on cars but i am trying to learn how to do a lot of my own stuff. Its a hobby i would love to pursue. I have a 97 ws6 trans am. So what would be the best gear ratio to put in my car? I am guessing 3.08 is not suitable for my type of car?

3.73s are going to be too high of a highway rpm for what he wants to do with the car. 2.73s are going to be what he is after to get the rpm down at highway speed/interstate speed and "save gas". Mine have whined since I bought my car and I am pretty confident they are set up wrong. He was trying to sell the whole "loud" or "high performance" gears thing too as I'm sure that is what he was told by the guy who installed them to cover his *** before he did the job. As far as I can tell it hasn't gotten worse and I have unfortunately had to drive on them now for a few thousand miles, but I would like to get it taken care of...just not high on the priority list yet. If you are wanting better mileage anyway though, it would definitely be worth getting in there and having it done properly and with the highway stock gears based on what you have said so far. Someone ought to have a stocker set of 2.73s they want to dump as that is probably the most changed out ratio by those going from stock highway to semi-racer/drag car I would think.

as I stated before, in an automatic you'd use 2.73's or 3.23's for optimal gas mileage...my 3.23/automatic car with bolt ons, built tranny, and heavy wheels gets around 25mpg highway...not too bad...

what i've heard tobreak them in is...
1. Drive 15 to 20 miles let it cool down and change fluid.
2. Drive 500 miles normal driving conditions, (avoid hard accelerating and braking)
3. At 500 miles change fluide again. Thats what i was told from Yukon

Last car had Richmond 3.73's that had a pretty good amount of whine - never had a problem with them. The car did have solid bushings in the rear and I'm sure that carried the noise into the car a lot. My stockers make a touch of noise as well. I haven't been in a lot of RWD vehicles that didn't make a little bit noise, a sign of wear yea, but not always a cause for concern.
