LT1 383 staged build. Need some advice please.
Quick story on the car and plan. I bought a 95 z28 M6 with 104k. Engine spun a bearing and the previous owner got a good running pullout out of a 96 TA. Deal is I'm going to go through the replacment engine and he's going to have it installed.
While the engine is out I decided I'll build the bottom end first with a forged 383 kit. And leave the stock top end.
Can anyone tell me if I should do something else while the bottom end is out. And will I NEED a tune if all else is stock? Should I expect ~300hp outta it with everything else stock? Also can I raise the comp. ratio to about 11:1 or higher or should I leave it about stock?
Any suggestions welcomed. I'm new to LT1s but not new to engines in general. Looks like it's a basic sbc for the most part.
This car will be my daily driver. So I need it to be reliable. The car only has a flowmaster and a k&n
Thanks alot
Jesse

Thanks for the responces guys. And wicked94z I may be taking you up on that! Your car looks sick BTW! are those the centerline wheels?
My mom has a 02 SS 35aniversary edition convertable M6. It's bone stock except for a lid and a flowmaster. Just with a 383 bottom can I expect to keep up at least with it?

thanks man, they're billet specialties street lites, i love these wheels man!
first off... goals for the car? really there's nothing you can do with a 383 than you can't do with a 355 unless you really plan on pushing the envelope (450+ rwhp) where the driveability will definitely be in favor of the 383.
with a good heads/cam 355 i guarantee you will rape MOST of the ls1 cars we have down here in so cal. Gotta decide if you want to stay smog legal or not. I've got a great guy here in upland to build you a motor, his prices are very reasonable and his work is absolutely top notch. I'll PM you my number...

Thanks man, just PM'd you.
I have no real hp goals yet. I just want to keep up with BPU ls1 cars for now. Once I get my nova dialed in I'm sure the mod bug will come bit me after.
Will tuning be required for a 383 bottom and the rest stock? Also should I stay with about 10.4:1 comprssion or can I go up to about 11:1?
Thanks guys

Yeah I'm thinking of an xfi280. What do you think?
I know the stock heads are going to choke it down a bit, but I have plans for some AFR's soon. Just need it running first.

Along with a new cam comes other expenses too, like valve springs, rockers, retainers, hardware, pushrods, lifters, guideplates, and most importantly a tune. Not to mention the other necessary bolt-ons like headers that you do not yet have. You're looking at at least a thousand dollars plus for the cam parts alone.

Yeah I know I got expenses for pushrods springs etc. But I figure the headers can wait and ill probably get a mail order tune from pcmsforless.
