Default Weird transmission noise

A while ago while I decided to find the top speed on my car. When I hit about 135 mph at about 3500 rpm there was a loud noise grinding noise that came out of the tranny as near as I can figure. I immediately let off. Any ideas what it could have been? I have 95 z28 with 4:10 gears and before I bought it the previous owner switched out the automatic of a 6 speed manual.

I believe he said 6spd. You sure it was'nt a vibration from the drive shaft?

When I got my bird up to 140, it sounded like the drive shaft was going to fly out, and I figured that I would wait until I can get an aluminum shaft to do anymore top speed testing.

Do you have any other suggestions, like make sure you fill your tank up when it gets empty or maybe engage the clutch before you shift?

Is it most likely the driveshaft that is making that noise? And if so do I need to replace it or is there something else that would need to be replaced or added, i. e. a driveshaft safety loop, that would fix this problem
