Default Found out the sad truth about my car!!!

Ok, so I was painting my rear hub rotors on my 94 z28 when I decided to check what type of gear I have in the rear end.So i did that tire revoultion to driveshaft turns thing and it turned almost three times. So I was like no wonder it feels kind of sluggish on stop and go trafific because of these wimpy 2 73 gears.I wanted to know could it feel kind of sluggish on the street because of these gears or could it be because im running an open y pipe off of some pacesetter longtubes? Please help me because my car feels slow in traffic and all that noise is just making it seem worse.Im not saying my car is misfiring or anything. It runs like a beast when the pedal is laid down, but this is just bugging me and it also has a k and n cold air intake and 1le elbow. Thanks for reading and any suggestions are welcomed.

When my car was stock, even with 2.73s, it moved out just fine. The problem with what you're describing is there is no concrete evidence that something is wrong. "Butt-dynos" are incredibly inaccurate and unless you get it to the track to see what it's doing. Only then can you make any sort of accurate assessment if something is ACTUALLY wrong, or if it's entirely psychological because you just found out you have 2.73s.

GU2 on the RPO sticker indicates 2.73s.

I have a 1999 Formy with 2.73 and it "feels" sluggish just because of the way shift points are set, and how slow traffic normally is. If you can romp on it and burn rubber, you are fine lol, the 2.73 rear is just a taller gear. It is nice being able to stomp the pedal and hit 60 in one gear though!

Yes that is why it feels sluggish. I assume you have an a4 car? If so upgrade to so 3.73 gears and have fun! Or if you can find a complete rear out of an m6 car with 3.42s would sometimes be cheaper than a gear swap. Then you also have a spare rear for when you break yours!

So do you all think if i finish the exhaust with an x pipe to two single chambers it will help the car feel less sluggish?I was talking to a friend and he said when he would run an open cutout on his lt1 trans am that it would feel sluggish down low as well, but he said that was due to less back-pressure, so I figure if I finish the exhaust up instead of running an open y pipe it would help?Or do you all think it would drive the same with open y as oppose to a true dual setup dumped?

Did you get your car tuned for the headers? my 95 with pacesetters felt weirdly sluggish after finishing the headers install but felt much better after I got it tuned ( I also had the 2.73's at the time, swap to a 3.73 or 3.42 if you can....its alot more fun)

Try driving my setup with 2.73s lol. I cant wait to get them out of there mainly because of the shift points. On the highway i bog down hard in 4th. But other than that it just takes a little more gas to get it going from a stop. Wide open they are fine, was able to beat my friends 6 speed LS1 pushing over 400 at the wheels. 3.73s will be a nice upgrade though, should run you around 600 at most for the swap

Not sure if anyone knew this, but all 2.73 cars have only 2nd, drive, and overdrive on the auto column. 3.23 cars have 1st, 2nd, drive, and overdrive. That's how you know (unless it was changed out obviously).

Yup!!

When I ordered my '96 Z-28, I was doing a 50 mile commute back and forth to work, so I didn't bother to order the 3:23s, so my console shift plate has only 2,3 OD.

However, when I stick my foot in it, it will scoot along!

3.73s and a good converter would help this situation

When I read the title I thought you ran over your dog, then your car died and your girlfriend left you for your best friend. Then I open it up and see that you found out you have 2.73 gears (the only other option is 3.23 in auto). I wish that was the biggest problem I had with my car.

But seriously, your car should still feel peppy with 2.73s. With the right tune, you should see some gain in power. I think ZGOBYBY is right, if you don't have 1 gear, then you have 2.73s. Or you can look it up with your vin at that link. None of that will change anything though. Live with 2.73 or change the ring and pinion.

Welcome to the site and good luck. I'm pretty new myself so don't listen to me.

Yea I ran open headers on my car, then put the exhaust back on and picked up 4 tenths!!!!!! Backpressure will especially help if you're undergeared.

Yeah, I bet the feeling of being sluggish is just your head telling you it feels sluggish do to 2.73's it's like back in high school when your boning the hottest chick in school then tomorrow you figure out so has been boned by the whole football team and wrestling team. Kind of a big let down. 3.73's and a stall and that sluggish feeling will be gone.

this is very true, there was a thread a while back where someone posted that you can cut a piece on the shifter so you can pull it down where first is supposed to be. I havent checked it out but im hoping its true because when I get my transmission redone id like to have first.

back on topic i also have 2.73 gears and it does feel sluggish sometimes in traffic, also gotta hate that 35 to 40mph dead spot where the car falls on its face until it gets up around 50. I cant wait to get a stall and gears put in.

I'm sure you can do that because I took a 4L60E out of a 2.73 car and put it in my 3.23 car, and I have no problem shifting down to 1st gear. I remember reading that post myself. There's something physically stopping the shifter from going down, remove whatever that is and your good to go.
