Default tube from head to head?

I've noticed that there's a little tube that went from one head to the other on the back of the motor. what is it? what does it do? is it needed? and if so where can i get one? i remember seein a thread about this but don't remember the outcome and cant find the post.

It's part of the reverse coolant system that LT1's have and is vital to correct operation of the coolant system. You can get a new GM but they are spendy.
I know there is a few threads about how to make one from AN fittings and hose. just do a search. Its called the steam pipe usually.

You ABSOLUTELY need it. It's called the "steam tube" or "coolant crossover tube". It is necessary to relieve pockets of steam and coolant from the heads, the coolant flows from front to back on an LT1. It routes the coolant and steam back to the radiator.
You can replace it with barbed fittings and rubber hose, -AN fittings and connectors, pretty much anything you want that will take hot coolant for years to come.
I have NPT to -6AN fittings on the back of my heads, with -6AN push-lok hose to a -6AN tee, then up to the radiator. The -6 push-lok hose is the perfect size to connect right to the radiator with a hose clamp.

next time I break one I'm just gonna build my own. be careful with them then can bend, kink, and break easier than you'd expect if you're not careful.

How hard is it to change the cap and rotor in that thing? I would imagine there isn't much clearance!

dude, follow the line lmao. It hooks into the radiator JUST ABOVE the radiator hose on the left side...JUST BELOW your Radiator Cap. Not the one that runs to your overflow tank, bt the one just under that
