That usually means the optispark is failing. The harness that plugs into the top could be corroded too. Good luck

What is the exact code? That will help us a lot more if you could post it. When they fail it wont always give you a high or low res. code, but it usually has something to do with the opti.

High resolution failure is usually a code 36, I got one on mine a few weeks ago, my MSD opti is shot.

Hopefully its the connector. They can get pretty corroded and cause problems. I heard of people having bad optis out of the box before but never had one personally.

If you have moisture in the opti it will kill the high resolution sensor. You can drive the car but it will run like **** under 3k rpm when it uses the high resolution part. My GM service manual quotes "May experience extended cranking times when a code 36 is set" it also says that it won't hurt the engine. The Snap-On scanner showed me increasing the knock count when I would get on the throttle below 3k. This is probably because the engine doesn't know where it is at.

Yea there is two pickups, one is a low res similar to a flying magnet setup and the other is the high res that generates signals for all 360 of rotation.

I don't know what to tell you, but if you set that code, you can ohm out the wire from the computer to the opti for the high resolution signal, if you read a small value less than 5 then its not the harness.

Dude....I know it sucks....
IT'S THE OPTI.

Opti's show up brand new in the box, dead. Other opti's fire right up and you get 10 miles down the road...and dead.
Some opti's go 100k miles without a hitch.
The High-Res code is an issue with the high resolution sensor inside the opti.
Time to return that opti for a new one.
Hope you didn't get it from Chandler. Good luck with their DOA junk.
