Default Cam Question

I have a 94 LT1 with NON VENTED opti. What exactly is the purpose of the dowel pin in the end of the cam face? Is it necessary on this cam even though it does not drive the opti, or can it be removed? Will this cause any balance issues? Thanks in advance.

It assists in locating the cam sprocket and ensuring correct timing.

The pin indexes the timing set to the cam, with the later optis it gets the additional task of driving the opti.

Right, I understand that, it's currently installed in the engine. So essentially it's a fail-safe and extra reassurance? So, more than likely I need to grind it down to the length I need since its currently too long. I wasn't thinking and installed it before I measured the cam pin length.
