Default Long tubes with y pipe and cat

I have a 94 z28 and was wondering if I put the stock cat basically on the end of the y would it still do the same thing? Does it matter that it's farther from the motor? I live in Cali and basically I just want it so if a cop looks under, I still at least have a cat. Also anyone know any 50 state legal cats for a good price? Thanks.

It will be tough shoehorning that cat in there. Run a pair of bullet mini cats right off of the header collectors for best cat performance. The further back the cats are, the worse the "scrub" the air and since your in **** Cali, that might matter.

Depending on the cop, even if he/she sees the cat and it actually functions you can still be written up because it is illegal to tamper/move a catalytic converter from its stock location. The most effective way to get around this for a OBDI car is to get mac mid lengths, have y-pipe fabbed and flange a catalytic converter in the stock location. That way you can run a flanged straight pipe when you want. I bet it would yield far better results than if you were to go LT's w/ even a dual cat y-pipe. Cheaper too. Many many used to run this setup on their OBDI cars years ago and were in the 12's with bolt-on's.

Edit...

There you go...

The law includes all exhaust prior to it entering the cat, unless said exhaust has an Executive Order blessed by CARB, which the Macs do since it has AIR/EGR provisions and keeps cat in stock location.

Ew... I think you would be much better off going with a dual cat y-pipe then. Unknown what will happen when you have to get an e-check...
