Default Just purchased my first LT1

I had bought a 96 z28 camaro in the fall with no motor or transmission. I recently aquired a 95 LT1 from a firebird for cheap that I want to put into the camaro.

I have a few questions:

-Are there any differences between 95 and 96 motors? (I know 95 at least has a vented optispark)

-The engine has about 123xxx miles on it, is there anything I should be changing before I put it in? I was maybe thinking of doing the oil pan seal, and rear main seal?

Any input would be great!
Thanks

If running the 96' cars PCM you will need to swap to a 96-97 timing cover, crank hub & crank reluctor for the added crank trigger... Or get a 95 PCM and harness.

Just get an OBD1 pcm (and some say the corresponding knock sensor). That is all you need for an OBD2 car/harness to run OBD1. Did it on my Formula and a friend of mine did the same thing on his trans-am. You could swap the harness, but the 96 harness will work just fine.

If you are in an emissions state and want it to be inspected, that won't work. The use the OBD2 port to check the system operation.

Thanks for the help guys, other than the optispark and water pump, are there any upgrades that should be done to the valve train?

I was able to use the OBD2 port to scan/log the car

Im not sure if im missing something, but why is everyone wanting to change the opti and h2o pump? Its pretty simple to switch em out with the engine on the car. If you ever plan to add a cam, id upgrade the valvetrain instead.

The 95 F-Bodies had the OBD-1 computer w/ an OBD-2 plug. The GM Mutants. Can't pull codes unless you have a reader that has an OBD-2 cable and reads OBD-1 computers.

I started to disassemble the engine yesterday, noticed that at some point someone tried to take the EGR tubes off of the exhaust manifolds and messed up the bolts. I ended up taking vice grips and heating them to remove them.

Are there any sources for new egr tubes?

Thanks

Lots of LT1 guys just remove the egr and air emissions stuff. Check ebay for blockoff plates (should be 3). On a 96 pcm, you'll need to get them tuned out via mail order tune (75 to 125 bucks). If you want to keep the emissions on, I have all of the stock stuff I can ship you. What's your budget for the motor? I'd recommend water pump (if that goes, your opti goes), rear main seal, oil pump (took out motor when it went at 115k) , and plugs. Now would be a great time for long tube headers, a 3200 converter, and any other boltons you would want down the road. Your money spent now will be well worth the time to get back in there later on. Just my .02

Got the heads off the other day, looks not bad, cylinder walls look good, etc Not sure if I'm going to completely tear down and rebuild yet

The fluid is just oil I put on the cylinder walls to prevent rust
