is there an easier way to do plugs?

:mad:I hate how hard t,a's/camaro's/firebirds are to do plugs. I mean does anyone know a easier way to do them?

F0x Slaughter 05-06-2012 07:58 PM

Headers. Haha. I reach majority from the top the 8 cylinder from the bottom and cylinder 2 is best if you remove the alternator or use the spark plug socket with a wrench on the end.

WS Sick 05-06-2012 08:41 PM

Well you could pay someone and you save yourself busted knuckles....lol

Z28Roxy 05-06-2012 08:58 PM

Cut a hole in the firewall to do #8 :p

rad23 05-06-2012 09:00 PM

Nope, bust up them knuckles and enjoy!!!!

Casper97WS6 05-06-2012 09:43 PM

I have shorties on and it pis$es me off, lol I don't mind busted knuckles blood over paying someone to do it. Idk ill get her done just >¦-( mad that the literally stuff these engines in. I hated my ls1 for this reason Lmao..

F0x Slaughter 05-06-2012 09:54 PM

Shorties are a waste anyways. Just go long tubes.

Plug changes drove me to doing long-tube headers as on of my first mods.... quick work now.

SLPs are horrible for access =(. On topic there really isnt an easy way to do it, just make sure you have one of those spark plug sockets with the end you can use an open ended wrench on. Makes it much easier

jsteele90 05-07-2012 12:34 AM

1inch extension

Casper97WS6 05-07-2012 04:22 AM

Yeah slp's are garbage throwing them away asap. I want long tubes, I've only owned the car for two weeks though lol.

bufmatmuslepants 05-07-2012 06:19 AM

Adding long tubes and removing the AC, heater box and air pump makes it SO MUCH EASIER, but many people dont want to walk that road with their DD.

Ok I cant speak on behalf of shorties exactly. Becuz i have the stocker manifolds.
But I knock down the Ypipe everytime now and after doing so....I can drop all the plugs with no busted knuckles in less than an hour. hell i think it might have been less than half.
I have done this now twice in a row. I will never go back to not doing it...I keep the ypipe nuts in good shape and wd-40 or the other silicon spray a few minutes before I knock it down. That takes about 15 minutes at most.
You can get to all 4 of the passenger side if im not mistaken from the bottom.
And on the driver side the rear 2. It becomes almost preference for the ones that were kinda hard. And for the hard ones well the difference is almost night and day.

do not touch the starter.
A reg. short wobbly ext may be needed and a reg short ext.
Drop the ypipe.

<=2hrs total. (Pre gapped plugs)

I can't remember if I drop the starter or not to do #6 and #8 but I think I do. I have only done plugs with LTs though.

Also you have to pull the alternator to get plug #2 IIRC.

WS Sick 05-07-2012 02:01 PM

I do them all from the top, for #6 I have a cut-down socket that I use a wrench on, 2 and 4 I can do with a ratchet, the rest are with regular length socketand wrench.

Casper97WS6 05-07-2012 03:00 PM

Yeah I can do the drivers side no problem with a socket wrench and socket. I'm gonna try the passenger side today LOL! I almost want to order long tubes before even doing it. But I was also thinking about taking one of my older spark plug sockets and welding a gear wrench onto it so it is like a socket wrench LOL!

gregrob 05-07-2012 07:15 PM

All you need to do is make a copy of the SLP spark plug socket.

Casper97WS6 05-07-2012 09:47 PM

Yeah I pry will Calvin still throwing these shorties away as soon as I buy a set of long tubes

gregrob 05-07-2012 09:53 PM

You could better spend money elsewhere.. are they shorties or mids. 1 5/8 or 1 3/4?

I went 11.50s at 7500 DA with plenty more left with 1 3/4 mids.

think its hard now, put TFS 21* heads on your car and try changing them then

lncboytre_d 05-08-2012 02:47 AM

2,4,6,8,1,&3 from the top. I have Pacesetter LT and all I use is a spark plug socket and a 3/4" wrench. I do not remove the alternator or anything from the right side. To access 5 &7 I put the car in the air...takes another 15 minutes start to finish on those two plugs. The entire job can be done in 45 minutes once you do it a couple of times. I used to dread doing plugs, now I change them once sometimes twice a month depending on the # of times I go to the track.
