Default Some Question About Rear End Gear Brands.

Hey guys,

Made a thread a while back and didn't expand on it the way I wanted to, left some questions out that I had. I have everything bought for a whole rear end gear refresh and install except for the actual gears.

I have the following:
1. 3 quarts 75w90 royal purple
2. Ratech 4111 solid pinion spacer (replaces crush sleeve)
3. TA girdle
4. TA girdle main bearing stud kit
5. GM axle slip additive
6. Richmond mega rebuild kit with timken bearings (including axle seals)
7. Gears - ???? Don't know what brand

I have been looking at motive blue box, motive orange box, yukon, richmond, strange, and recently G2 -- good priced and seem to get good results. Does anyone know if G2 is a good brand for our applications and do they make 3:73's in a 2 series carrier? Also my car is A4 and I've been assuming 3:73's is my best bet, do anyone of you guys think differently? Maybe something like a 3:90 or 4:10? Eventual stall of 3600 is in the works.

This is from summit racing on the G2 - G2 Axle & Gear Performance Series Ring and Pinions 2-2015-373, doesn't list which carrier?

I have done gears in my 70 Nova and 96 B-body. . Motive in Nova &Yukon and Precision (was really AAM re-boxed) in the B-body. AAM (American Axle Marine were OEM)

whatever brand you get, make sure pinon receives ABS reluctor...if you want ABS to work. If you want ABS you also need the corresponding reluctor gear for the gear ratio you pick. it presses on the pinon shaft

Also on gear oil, check manufacture of your limited slip as Eaton for example does NOT recommend synthetics.

My vote is for Motive Performance Gears, what ratio is gonna depend on your tire size. 3.73-26" or 4.10-28" that's if your N/A. Boosted or NO2 can change the ratio you want.

Rear end was replaced at like 10k miles due to a defect. I don't know exactly on the rear it would of been a stock replacement in 97'. Also first I have heard of the ABS reluctor and the corresponding reluctor gear. Where would I go about picking those up at?

I have 17/275/40 NITTO NT05R out back
I have 17/245/45 Kuhomo Estca in front

Going to be all motor for a long time with eventual NO application (like a few years or more down the road).

I'm assuming I have an auburn rear end in my car. Car was built dec of 96' then sold in 97' in the spring (if I remember correctly). Been running synthetics since I've owned the car.

any good gear retailer should have corresponding reluctor gears for gear sets that are ABS.

I have a 8.5 10 bolt IIRC the F body has the 7.5 so I assume they also have a reluctor gear on the pinon shaft but someone who does know can advise if the 7.5" does/does not for ABS equiped vehicles. I bought my reluctor from Bob Shirley http://www.impalassforum.com/vBullet....php?do=getall on the impalass forum. I don't know if he also makes them for the 7.5 pinion but again any gear place selling ABS compliant gear sets should have then

The Auburn "may" not have issues with synthetics as they are a cone type diff. when it dies, consider a Eaton. Many swap diff's when doing a gear change since the labor is $0. If your diff is good than leave it

The reluctor is specific to the b-body 3 channel ABS system. Pretty sure the f-body addressed it differently.

Far as gear manufacturer don't overthink it.

4.10s have a small pinion which might prove to be slightly weaker.

I would not be using Royal Purple.
I would look at the Ratech Smartsleeve.

You mentioned a 2 series carrier. I assume that is what you have now. If I recall correctly rear gear manufacturers do not make any gears higher than 3.73 for a 2 series. Of course it has been a while since I have looked for gears (maybe 12 years or so).

Later ... Larry S.

They make a thicker ring gear for 2-series carriers.

And you don't have to worry about the ABS stuff, on an F-body with 3-channel ABS the reluctor ring is on the carrier. You dont have to remove or change it when doing gears.

GM Motives if you can find them. Richmonds will whine/scream and cry like a 2 dollar street walker.
