Default 385 vs. 397 Power Difference

Getting ready to rebuild my 383, gonna go .040 over and was thinking on just going to a 396. I need pistons anyways, and can sell my crank off and buy a 3.875 crank. I have le3 lt4 heads and max ported lt4 intake with supporting mods. What would I expect to gain going 397 over my would be 385? Just looking for input

With the same top end, virtually nothing.

Heads and cam dictate power, cubes basically will shift where the power is made.

The real benefit to more cubes is being able to use bigger heads and a more aggressive cam then a smaller motor and still stay in the same RPM range.

As far as HP is concerned.....this is pretty much the case.

But.....with more stroke, and everything else being equal, you can expect a bit more torque through the RPM range.

If you take this opportunity to increase your compression ratio (to about 12:1 to 12.5:1 if you're not already there) then you can also give the engine more cam. In this case.....you could see a 5% to 10% increase in power.

about 10-15 HP/TQ at the flywheel depending on how you build it assuming you're comparing to the 383 stroker (assuming we're using equal parts as before). You'll primarily see more of a torque difference than anything, ideally. It's roughly a 3% difference in displacement for comparison purposes. More is more, though.. right?

If it were me? I'd build it. No reason not to if you're getting an entire forged assembly. It's silly not to if you're spending the same amount and getting less displacement.

There's also some really nice lightweight 383 assemblies out there for decent pricing. I'd be curious to see if the gains were negligible between a "regular" 396 stroker kit and a lightweight 383 kit. I speak in this regard because I'm also on the fence for my next build and I've considered both directions; each with good points associated with them.

for the past 3-4 years Ive ran a all forged 383, but the piston to wall clearence was loose, and at this point with the miles I put on it over the years its just tired. So Im going .040 over regardless, I figured for the price of the different crank and clearencing, was it worth it. Car made good power before, just looking to get some more out of it.

what'd done to the rest of the car? Because if the rest of the car is mostly stock, then I'd just get new pistons and put the rest of the money into the remainder of the vehicle.

It would be dumb to buy a crank at this point given what you have said.
